Discuss I am cancelling NIC and joining NAPIT in the Business Related area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hi mate, NIC are renowned for this kind of thing, to be honest they are probably all the same, but i'm with ELECSA and I've always found them really helpful when needed.

I have joined Elesca because i found nic to be so rude and NON helpful or interested.
I would recomend Elecsa to everyone. They were so helpful and supportive.

you gotta be kidding?? most people want the cheapest job possible and couldnt give a ---- about a certificate.
from personal experience i have found that most people i meet have heard of niceic and think that means you are an electrician so gives them some confidence in you.
most people have never even heard of the other schemes, that is why i chose nic. if you believe otherwise then you can join whichever scheme suits you.
at the end of the day the nic have the biggest public profile and their charges are the same as other scheme providers so until the others do something about it by offering reduced membership costs or changing public opinion i wont be changing
Yes, some of them don't want to part with money and they don't care for any certificate, likewise they are not bothered as who you are registered with. Some will turn away if you tell them that you are a NICEIC electrician because they think your charges will be beyond their reach.

The public has a misconception on registered electricians in general and this opens the backdoor for the cowboys.

just goes to show how it differs from area to area ;)

Hi Electricalserv,

I merely suggested a source of info for p11jor. Judging by your comment I can only deduct that the advice given will be to pursue the 17th Edition, 2391 etc that you've highlighted.

Apologies if I've inadvertantly caused you concern

Ant @ NAPIT.

No Ant you haven't.

It came up the other day that yopu can get on napits full scope with a 5 day ISO course. I'm unhappy with that and id like to know who I can contact to complain

In the days before Part Pee The NICEIC was a charity based consumer organisation where it put the electrical safety interests of the consumer's first, they had no concern for the interests of their approved contractors. Electricians did not need to be registered with any organisation and the NIC approval was seen as a mark of those that voluntarily offered themselves up for techical scrutiny so they could wear the NICEIC badge with pride. Of course the NICEIC is a now a business, but the ethos still remains in there somewhere and perhaps that's why it is easier to get registered by other organisations who may have less stringent rules and requirements? I still don't set up any particular jobs for my assessments, I just hand over a list of all work and the assessor picks any two to visit. If I could only offer two jobs that I was happy to be inspected then I would expect to be knocked back by the NICEIC.

Its just as easy if not easier to join the NICEIC than any other scheme!

just paid niceic in april for their annual fee engineer came out in may and i just got another bill in today for £340 for the engineer coming in may
I rang them and they said but the anual fee just covers a half days visit RIP OFF
I said to the unhelpful person i talked to that i willl begin the de - registration process and they couldnt have cared less what do we get for the annual fee eh FRESH AIR

A question,

....So what would you have to do, to fail one of these scam providers acceptance assessment, or one of these so called annual assessments??? Does anyone know of anyone, that has failed either of these?? Just curious, as i've never seen anything mentioned on any of threads that i've read so far.

I've not read all this thread so apologies if it's already been said. If your reg with the NIC is still active, ELECSA may waver their joining charge. It's worth ringing them to find out.

if you are going for full scope in elec, plumbing, vent and some heating plus MCS then NAPIT are very competitive, just paid £1102 and am not looking forward to al l of the assessments.

Delayed Reaction!

I'm an Elecsa man, as above, always very help full.

Assessors (now ECA i believe, previously BBA) very help full, & informative

All the scams will let you in via free transfer. If there is still time left with your current scam, you can change over to another free of charge and you will be required to have an assessment at the same time you would have with your previous provider.

It's like phonejacker isn't it?
"Are you happy with your current part p providings sir"

Nic are the the most unhelpful set up in history......I have my assesment on Thursday and the two examples I was using are for a housing company who went bust so I have no access.....I phoned nic about this and there only solution was me getting charged £290 + vat for a revisit, when I asked if I could still keep Thursday's visit and at least spend the morning in a cafe with this assessor they said no......why not if I am paying for this!.....they take £290 + vat from me then can still send this assesor somewhere else!.......this to me is proof nic are money grabbing.....

I shall be phoning napit on Monday morning

Sorry M8 but I agree with them on this, the inspector needs to look at your Jobs, if you have none to show him even though not your fault on this occassion then they will need to revisit, it's all in the agreement when you get enrolement, not their fault this time IMO, but there you are.

I am with the NICEIC have been for 10 years never had a problem. The inspector i have is really friendly and helpful i have his email address and if i have a question he answers it the same day. I would be interested to know the cost of the other organisations and would i still have to have the assessment seeing as i have been in the NICEIC for so long

Best to keep quiet about being with them for so long
I can well understand your embarrassment having to admit the folly to the other scheme assessor

Costs are all comparable, each scheme charges the cartel rate

This wasn't about the cost this was about the fact that I didn't have a job to show him due to unfortunate circumstances.

So my argument was why couldn't he meet me at say my home for the morning as I was still paying the £290 plus vat

This time spent with me could of prepared me for my assessment with him

Instead they took the £290+vat and probably sent him to another assessment making another £290 elsewhere due to my misfortune

But it's not their fault M8 is it? one of their conditions when you get enrolement is you need to be carrying out electrical installation work and once a year need to show them a selection of your works during the year from your last inspection, now okay you had a tough time this year due to a company going under, and they will be sympathetic about that, but a re-visit has to be carried out, due to your, not their, fault, saying you are going to leave them and look at another scammer due to this isn't going to help you in this instance, you need to have work to show an inspector regardless of what scam they are representing, sorry but your in the wrong not the NICEIC on this occassion, and you need to grow up about it and stop throwing your toys out of the pram about it.

Lol you still don't get what I am saying do you?

About the fact I still couldn't meet the assessor for the "time I have payed for"

I honestly doubt any of the schemes would have one of their engineers sit down the cafe with you for half a day so you can feel like you got your money's worth

What would you say if a customer said that your garden lights for the job you booked in haven't turned up yet so instead can you help me mow the lawn and wash my car!

as MDJ says it's your problem really mate no offence but they do declare this loud and clear in there T&c's

im sure you must have more than 2 jobs in a year you could show, I always think of this through out the year and speak to clients on jobs I've got on well with or domestic jobs who are retired etc and get around 7 or 8 jobs earmarked for the yearly assessments t hen you ain't running around like a headless chicken panicking trying to get jobs ready last minute when someone lets you down, offer them a discount on the next job you do for them if you have to, I have done before

you need to suck it up and learn from your experiences and be ready next year, it's no-one else's fault

and the NIC ain't a charity no more so of course they are gonna send that engineer to another job, you gotta remember they got loads a Electrical Trainee to certify before they need an NVQ in April lol

Exactly you have pointed out what I was getting at......they have made money from my misfortune. As in doubled there money as there assessor will be elsewhere bringing in another £290+ vat whilst also getting my £290+ vat

I have not said about the short notice being a problem I know about late cancellations etc so this wasn't the issue. It was the fact that they have doubled there money for my misfortune and clearly said back to me the field officer will have somewhere else to go now.

Fair enough if he nowhere else to go then yes there will be a shortfall.

And all this you have to have a assessment then they shouldn't be sending me letters offering me a free scheme transfer.

Your comment regarding mowing the lawn.......it was only yesterday I was fixing a bed at a rental property due to a false call out, in the past whilst having my time wasted I have, fitted a door handle, moved wardrobes, cleared gutters.....this list goes on. So in answer to your question yes I would do anything to help someone as I am not money driven unlike this load of bull part p
