The going rates about 75p per item or less these days that's why we avoid it if we can. We only offer it as part of another service. ie landlords

Nice one!

One of my clients who runs a couple of hair "salons" gave me a flyer offering cheap PAT testing someone had put through his door. It was one of those click and go Vista print jobs.

Strange pricing policy.

85p per item

£9 for ten

£120 for 100

So the more you had done the less you save?!?!?!?!

I've no idea now, this was about 18months ago.
Can't even remember what he called him self... Probably Pat think he might have been a postman during the day!!
All I can remember was the pricing and the naff flyer & business card that was like a template for a carpenter or something.

as you said typical "FREE" Vista print rubbish..... a mate of mine got some cards from them and they are like paper!! absolute garbo!!

i use good print and not had a problem, seem reasonable and good quality!

well my day of drilling walls never happened as my 450mm drill bit was 200mm too short!! so i fitted some nice loft lights for a chap for 60 quid cash (all material supplied for me as well....) i think he had a go at it but gave up as he was not sure what to do!! lol

Insurance you'll need Professional Indemnity - Because your offering advise (Telling customers their appliances are ok)

I take it you have 2377? and a copy of Code of Practice - The IET. Although I think someone mentioned NAPIT do their own version of 2377?


You'll obviously need a PAT tester these range from a "pass / fail" machines which only does just that, tells you if the applience has past or failed. About £200

To an all singing all dancing machine for over £1,000


There are lots of makes and models to choose from.
My personal favourite for pat testing is SEAWARD PAT Testers, Multifunction Testers and other Electrical Test Equipment from Seaward
Although Megger also make some very good machines.

It al really boils down to how much you want to spend / how much work you intend on doing.

i got 2 mill liability insurance, i dont have any indemnity though as i tell them what the machine says... pass or fail i dont give advice other than to throw it out !

i use a kewtec kt73 cheap and chearful machine, i write results down and ype them up on my softaware

i charge different amounts depending who uts for and how many!!

personally i would only advise Pat testing as a side avenue and not as a main job unless you get some big contracts in!

As you said I think they're ok if you a void the obvious FREE templates, you know the ones. You see them pinned up at the chip shop...

That one's vista print........... so's that one.........................so's that one......................... oh look.... the same design as the first one............etc


You get the idea!



NOTHING TO DO WITH VISTA PRINT - Also stay away from the cheap pen companies, one with national in it's name. Based in Ireland.
They send you a free pen with your company name one, a quality metal job and say you can have 250 of them for under £100.
When they come they're really cheap and cr***p

We had some they all leaked..... Over customers carpets, clothes, handbags.

Do you think the company who supplied them cares......

Nah So we're left with 250 leaking pens if anyone wants one!!!

I'm going to a "Megger" thing tomorrow evening in Norwich.
Where, after reading the letter they intend to flog their "Business in a box" and other PAT testing machines.

I'm only going coz you can win stuff and there's always the give aways.

Anyone else been to one?

Firm i used to work for charged £2 an item but about 3 years ago so rate could be maybe 1-10 items £1.50 each,10-50 £1.30 each etc etc,if you get a fluke or similar(not cheap about £700),or even ethos,they both can print out results for a proffesional finish,you get a barcode scanner and labels and can buy more for bigger clients(say a 200 items upwards) then when retesting just scan barcode,all automatic,but cost would need to be increased to cover this,i used to do 2 warner hotels @1500+ items at each every year,dont mind a few but that was serious brain shutdown,would recommend you hit the hotels,pubs,arcades,ladbrokes etc find out who does it for them and compete on price if possible,you can earn a living on it but ive done my sentence on that lot goodluck.

i used 3 of thier "business in a box" machines at London when i was working in the royal navy last year!!

excuse my language but they are **** unless you have a laptop set up and you know how to use it 100%

for small one off jobs the input was too long as it took ages to input all the details in for each item.
BUT if you do repeat business then they are ideal as just scan test print! scan test print.....


unfortunately the royal navy paid top dollar for the kit but went cheap and never got a laptop!!
plus it dont help when you mechanical systems work mates get trained on pat testing and have clumbsy fat spanner fingers!! argh!
