Which crimpers would be best for me? I've seem some which are CK (bootlace ferrule) and then I've seem that are just ferrule crimpers which make a square/rectangular end, but these were £200+ which I'm not prepared to pay!
Would normal crimppers with pin/pointed crimps be ok?

Try something like these about £20, you dont need anything fancy Buy Tooling - Crimp Terminals TERMINAL CRIMPING TOOL CK 3645 online from RS for next day delivery.
these are just an example but only go up to 2.5mm ferrules, their are plenty of range and options out there if you look.

Can the strands be tinned together with solder instead of using a crimp?

Not if the end is under a screw terminal.
BRB Reg 526.8.2 - I haven't got the green book with me at the moment but its not changed, I don't think!
