And what's your views on getting the brushless model? Or does it not make much difference
the brushless models run cooler, ive got a Makita brushless and it runs cooler and for longer than the older version on the same batteries (body only tool so they were not new batteries that i tested it with)

its rare i have to charge batteries in a day now unless im drilling a lot of 16mm holes with my sds.

the brushless drills from all the manufacturer's should run cooler because there isnt friction from the carbon brushes for a start

Makita all the way for me. Great array of tools, same battery, which you can get in 3, 4 and now 5Ah versions.

I burnt out a Combi drill cutting massive holes in I-beam webs, but I worked the nuts off the poor thing, and it still lasted 3 years bless it.

Ordered another as soon as I smelt burning plastic.

the good thing about the new ones is they cut out when they get too warm, let them cool and there fine.

i really abused my old one, drilled over 20 x 20mm holes in a glandplate in an outside panel.

Don't rule out hitachi.

They are utter rubbish, I was issued one of their SDS drills by a previous employer, it had to be replaced under warranty every 4/5 months as they kept failing in normal use. We had similar trouble with 2 cordless drills of theirs too.

When I started my apprenticeship my mentor had a spit 322 SDS which was a few years old then and was still going strong 8 years later despite serious abuse. That's the kind of reliability you want from a drill!

I'm a makita fan all my power tools are makita, always have been
However last year I burnt out my cordless (holesaw too big, my fault!)
And I had to get another asap ,
So I went to screwfix and bought a dewalt 18v brushless etc, and I think its performance has been as good as the makitas with the plus side being the batteries are a lot cheaper eg 3 AH is £50.00 versus £120.00

? a 5ah makita is £99 3ah are £50.

besides makita batteries have been the same for years so you dont need to change every couple years (i got my 458 £79 inc vat body only)

Dude where are you shopping? 3.0Ah are only £60! They were £120 when they first came out!

Ok my bad, I haven't had to buy any for a while! this was a price I was quoted last year and having bought replacement makita batteries previously I knew a pair or trio were usually more expensive than sometimes buying a new drill!

I've had 2 of the 3ah makita batteries fail on me n I took them to a local tool shop and had them replaced on a warranty claim each time, they took the old battery off me and gave me a new one there and then, that was back when they were 120 quid a pop

shanky - where did you get your 458 from? I'm tempted on one but I've seen the 481 and want that but it's 140 quid body only

Makita for me aswell, had the makita 458 combi but it failed after 6 months of use and I need some new batteries so bought the
Makita DLX2040MJ set with 2 5amps batteries been. Looking good so far.

? how did it fail after 6 months?

i can honestly say ive only had one major issue with makita gear, had a faulty sds (manufacturing issue, the fear selector poped off)

since makita had a look no problems

looking around for a new drill as mines bust....

anyone brought anything from these before looking at possibly getting the dewalt?

Dewalt TSKIT1 18V XR li-ion Brushless Combi Drill and Impact Driver Twinpack (2 x 4Ah Batteries) - TStak Kitbox

I killed two of the combi drills last year (not the brushless ones). The impact drill though has worked great with beaver bits or augers on hard wood joists for several years.

if I was buying again I'd by Bosch professional or Makita
