Ok...harrogate, £45.25/h

I only live down the road in Leeds. Get me a job on half of that and I'll pay my own bus fare + buy the gaffer his morning coffe and bacon buttie every day.;) (ps lads, Harrogate is the most expensive place to live outside of London. You need to be on £18 p/h just to afford a council house and food).:p

I'm not gonna be rich any time soon on my wage. work for a firm, 5 years experience, 17th edition and 2391. £10.50 p/h.
roughly taking home £300-£400 each week depending on hours. I get use of all tools and van (during work hours)
the work is pretty relaxed for the most part but there's always the urge to go self employed some time, but now i've just started a mortgage i dont fancy the risk just yet. gain another year or 2 experience and see how i feel.

South of England £150 a day local subie or 250 if direct to client

Own van tools 30 years etc

My rates match Hasel5 here, 6 years experience, 17th, 2391, tools van testers etc. £15p/h to most people if subbing labour, £17.50p/h to the firm I most frequently sub to. £25p/h if direct.

When it comes to pricing I would be gutted if I never lost out because I would hate to think I'm the cheapest out there. Put a good price in and do a good job

i like that moosey. "put in a good price and do a good job"

thats exactly what i tell my customers,,,and if they dont like it they can get someone else who will cut corners, use cheaper materials and when theres a problem the sparks wont go back because its not worth their while.

evening all,,

this is a little exercise to figure out the average wage of a sparky in the current climate.

could you please post your day rate, years of experience, wether u have a van tools etc?

and please state whether you work in domestic, commercial or industrial sector

to get the ball rolling i sub for a sparks who gets regular work @£120 per day.

i have a van power tools and 5 years experience

Mate, I've seen adverts on the jobcentre plus website offering 12ph for gold carded sparks with 17th and 2391!!!

whys that then? im doing my level 2 now starting level 3 in 6 weeks and thought electrician was a smart move even though it's stupid hard to get any site training.
There you go then mate. Take one step forward with eyes closed and jump right in!!! You've been conned fella, loads of us have. The Government just wanted to massage the employment figures. If we had thought about it, we'd have known all along. Where was all the work that required every man and his dog to become a sparkie going to come from in the first place? Do you know what, you should SERIOUSLY consider moving courses NOW. The construction industry was at one time the only way for a working class lad to earn a decent wage - but NOW we're fighting against half of eastern europe and constant downwards spiralling wages; that just make it not worth the game.

when i was doing my air con apprenticeship before i got made redundent the guys in that college said that the electrician trade was full of cowboys foreigners and ****** with papers who don't know what to do but cos they got there 17th edition to most people who dont know anything about the trade think there trained and experienced one lad was saying that a electrician fitted a shower with a 1mm cable which just set on fire straight away and burnt half his bathroom wall down with it haha,
but besides that what is there to get involved in now im 18 and cant enrole into any other course now it's too late right?

Wow, after reading the last few posts its putting me of going back to college after the xmas hols, I started in September this year and still have 2 1/2 years to go!!
I'm working in a factory 35years old and wanted a career change........The wages at the beginning of the topic sound very good to me I would take anything above 30k a year for a 50 hour week.

i'm reading between £120 and £250 a day......nout wrong with that.

People are bound to disagree. The problem is there are so many people re training to become an electrician because they have 'heard' how much money there is in it. I believe the only way to become an 'electrician' is to serve an apprenticeship. Most electricians spent 4/5 years training to become an electrician, gaining valuable experiance only to be passed by someone who works in an office during the day and attends college to study electrical in the evenings. I know its not always the case, but how is this possible! There is no way attending night college for afew years is equal to apprenticeship. I still work for the firm where i served my time, im now 24. There are a couple of guys on the firm who have taken the night school route, and there not bad lads. But because of there age, on first apperiance on site there assumed to be of a higher/more experianced electrician, and they probably dont have half my qualifications, as much experiance, and have been doing it half the time i have. Thats what gets to me about this trade!

hi all

I can understand that but for me and im sure others in my college class there is no way we could start an apprentice because we are used to the wage we are picking by working in the day and to take a gamble to switch jobs for an apprentiship would mean either selling my house or wait for the baliffs to chuck me out for non payment of the mortgage.

so we use the college to get the qualification and then hopefully fingers crossed we land a job in the trade, but to be honest im doing this course to gain knowlege for myself if I get a job afterwards which pays either the same as im on now or more then its a bonus.

I heard the statistics for students who finish the course and actually land a job is 1.5 out of 20!!
wish I had done this 18 years ago, ha that just make me sound so bloody old :)

Do you know what Nifty, I'd even doubt them figures mate - 'ONLY 1.5 OUT OF 20', in this climate. And to make matters worse fella, Can you see things improving in 2011? I wish that I'd become a hairdresser now lol.
