Hi you brainy people

Think am gonna have to dig myself a trench and put on my tin hat for this question but here goes, can a standard PVC/PVC cable be clipped direct outside to a wall or fence as long as its protected by rcd. Or does it have to have a form of mechanical protection.

it can, but not advised, as over time it will degrade with UV (if we ever see sun again).

How long is the run?,can it not go in conduit or be done in armoured,as tell said uv light will make the cable degrade over time,having said that seen many older installs just clipped direct,but for me it looks rough and those clips will be the first to rust and break leaving the cabl sagging.

and if the cable was clipped direct (method C)....would it require an RCD?.....and if so why?

I wouldn't recommend T&E outside without protection. Get some HiTuff

My neighbour has t+e feeding a external light and I see it every time I do the washing up. His pvc has corroded and is in a bad way

Conduit would make a tidy job

I have some T+E going to my outside light, put in about 15 years ago and its fine. It probably helps that it has been painted several times since installation.

Because its surface and its less than 50mm, if it was more than 50mm from surface then it wouldn't require rcd @ glennspark

Small SWA cable cleats. And yes this does mean drilling holes!

use pvc covered P clips & standard red wall plugs.

swa with cleats,plugs and screws

if thats your main concern

(or use fp200 with clips (not used them the ones you screw in) and use plugs in wall as well)

and who says FP200 is good for outside installation? if you use red FP200, it will soon go pink, FFS, and who wants that?
