I have been asked if it is possible to convert a standard heated towel rad into an electric heated rad. I explained its better kept as part of rhe heating system but they are adamant they want electric. My question is are all towel rads suitable for conversion? Or should i convince him to have a new dedicated electric one?

the problem is that if you convert it and it goes wrong, it's your arse that will get cold when the lawyers pull your pants down. advise a new rad.

You can convert most std towel rails so they run electric and central heating by adding an element

I remember seeing the elements in a Screwfix catalogue a while ago, and yes - you can run the towel rail on either central heating or leccy.

Leccy during summer when heating is off, and run off central heating in winter. The best of both worlds! :)

Have a look here: Electric Element for Towel Rail and Controls Radiator Valves

you need the T- piece

Then an element of whatever wattage you like. Have it with a built-in thermostat if you want.

Take the lockshield valve out of the towel rail & screw that T-piece in by means of the threaded bit at the top.

Screw the element into the tapped hole at the bottom of the T-piece.

Screw the lockshield valve into the tapped boss sticking out from the side of the T-piece.

Obviously you'll need to shift the pipe a bit to line-up with the lockshield valve in it new position.

I'll let you decide how to wire it ......
