Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has had similar trouble to myself in finding employment. I decided to get out of the dead end job i was in after my daughter was born,so i went to night school and did the 2330 electrotechnical technology over 3 years, and later the 17th edition. I did most of the 2395 course but didnt take the exam as a few of us had heard that there were problems with the course not matching the questions in the exam. At the time there was only a 40% pass rate and having no on site experience a few of us realised we had no chance.

Anyway after i qualified in 2012 i started searching for employment applying for everything from electrical mates to improvers to service engineers, then i got a break through someone i knew. I got a job servicing pumps in the wastewater industry, ( thats sewage to the layperson lol
:75:) This was ok as i got to see how control panels work and did some dead testing to confirm the windings of the pump were in the right sequence and IR testing, usual stuff. But unfortunately due to the recession i was laid off and havent been able to find anything since. I worked with a couple of guys who go around house bashing to gain experience as im sure pretty much everyone has, but apart from that ive had no luck whatsoever.

I'm starting to feel like the time spent at college was a colossal waste of time as most applications i make dont get an acknowledgement, and i cant gain experience without being employed. It's now 3 years since i left college and there are people leaving now with the stuff fresh in their minds so probably stand more chance than i do. I've got an application in with the local bus company for a trainee driver which im pretty sure ive got, but if/when i do get this job i think that ill have to settle with it for life. It just seems such a waste of money and i dont know what else to do now to try and get into the industry.

So if anyone has any ideas, assistance, advice or a job going, i'd be glad to hear of it cos i feel that this is my last chance now. Sorry for waffling but im sure other people are going through this aswell.

Chris.

go for a cscs card to allow you on site. then sign on with a few agencies. ruillion, rimington booth, hays, to name 3. take work as a sparks, or as a mate to start.

Hi Chris where did you do your course at ?

I agree with Tel - try some agencies.
It's temporary work and you might only be on jobs for a week or so at a time before getting laid off with no notice, but it's experience, and you get paid for it.

Wot? U meen ur not on the promised £50K a year changing fusebords?

Chris,
Given that you have some experience in the industrial field. Have you looked for work in that direction? It is the way to go as it is where the real skill shortage is.

There are a few agencies that specialise in engineering personnel. With even limited experience you may land a mates job.
Drop me a PM if you’re interested.

Before anyone says anything, I’m not associated with any of them. I’m sorry, I won’t give out names in open forum.
