Electrical shock from extractor hood

DIYer here. Just purchased extractor to fit into chimney. Have fitted fused spur to downstairs ring main. Tried to test extractor by applying plug before fitting to fused socket. Worst thing I have ever done. Got a really bad shock while holding extractor. Have applied plug to extractor previously and never experienced anything like this. Can anybody assist me. Thanks in advance

Thank you for replying. Instructions say Warning! This appliance must be earthed - think I have messed up here, item bought online - clearly Chinese import via Co based on Nottingham. Don't usually buy electrical appliances online and was hesitant. Feel I may need to Earth appliance but don't know enough abbot how to go about this.

OMG. I think you have just answered the problem. Having thought about it. I think I connect the earth under the fuse. Not sure why. Socket I plugged into, tested and correct, Fuse box RCD protected. I want to try again with it on the floor and test to see if live when connected. Is this how you would go about it? Thank you for everything. First tinge I have posted on this site. I don't mind paying to get trades out but felt I could tackle this. Main issue being getting the cann thing fitted into chimney.

Can only remember from memory and talking to my daughter I may have connected earth beneath fuse in L spot. Would this have done it? Disconnected yesterday thinking lucky to be alive. Well actually not with the problems I am trying to plough through...Really appreciate you're reply and those of others. I am really grateful and this is a lesson learnt

Connecting earth to the fuse side of the plug would have made the extract casing live so yes this is the likely cause.

Red was a good colour for live. Denotes danger... brown could be confused as earth, because, well earth, as in dirt is brown??

It sounds like you had a lucky escape, and your family. As you say you were holding it I presume it went through your hands, via the heart. I strongly recommend you get a check up at the A&E dept for any harm it may have done. It can happen that damage is caused to the heart in such situations as you describe. Sorry if that sounds alarmist but I would take it seriously.

good point, even a visit to the local GP, they probably have an ECG machine which is what they are going to test you with.

Sorry but the earth is just green in that extractor causing confusion, no pass I judge as adjudicator from NICEIC which is God, at least in their eyes.

Only today was thinking the same. Have fitted loads of plugs and can't believe I wired it this way. Never would have thought the repercussions would have been so bad.
....kind of noticed something but distracted and didn't pay it a great deal of attention. Has scared the hell out of me. Thanks for your concern. I may just do that. Had another great day moving the frame in the chimney, covered in soot then covered in bath water in dealing with an iced up pipe (never happened before). Having the time of my life at the moment.

CDA is the in-house brand of Howdens.
They may or may not be chinese, but tend to be generally far better made then those of Cokee Lewis (They do not bother with earthing any more), Which still is superior to those sold in screwfix where warranty claim (after one month when By low its covered by shop ) requires you to send it to factory in HONG-Kong for assessment...

Accepted, I have done some checking and it seem to be a UK sub-company (with some UK manufacturing) of a polish company. That might explain why it is safer then Cokee

Beko was (and still is) a Turkish company, owned by parent company Arcelik. It has never been owned by any Czech bloke, with or without the help of friends and family, and has never been owned by Dixons Retail.

That's not related to the content of your previous post.

I haven't commented about where they manufacture products for various markets, nor the fact that white goods are often produced to slightly different specifications for large retail groups, but simply pointed out that Beko's owners were not whom you had stated.

Wife didn't mind me skipping Valentine's after the weekend. Final straw this morning....Isolation valve forced off uninsulated water pipe in utility following low temperatures (Pennines). Flooded utility, blew the electrics. I'm just waiting for the next problem....
