Hi,

I would be grateful if anyone could confirm the certification required for the addition and extension of a fire alarm. Scenario is, I have installed the fixed wiring for the alteration to an addressable system as per their drawings, fire alarm contractor will commission.

I assume I can cover this with a MWIC as it technically an alteration of an existing circuit?

If you have altered the zone/sounder circuits you need a modification certificate as recommended in BS5839:1.

It depends on what has been agreed, the commissioning person may be doing his own testing as the documents are likely to require all the resistive values etc to be logged for future ref'.
I have installed many systems where we have had to get in the manufacturers own teams in to commision an install, on occasion they do all the testing and logging, on others they are happy for you to do it and will document your results.

Unfortunately myself and FA contractor are unlikely to cross paths as they are not due to commission until May.

My remit was to provide the fixed wiring alterations and containment to the drawings provided by the FA contractor.

I have tested the newly installed cabling and have the results, IR and continuity. 3 separate circuits in total. It just how I document this, mainly to cover myself as I will not be going back to this job come next week.

Thanks for your replies gents

Take your own readings just for confirmation, and record them on a sheet. Maybe forward to person ordering work if youl not see the fa guy.

Sometimes just writing an old fashioned letter has it's value. If you say the work is complete, the new wiring is tested, and you are assuming that the commissioning contactors are taking care of all certification required you have covered yourself and given them a chance to disagree.
