Iv recently upgraded a consumer unit in a small terraced house. When I carried out an inspection I found that the sockets I sampled were spurred, the tests i did I.R, ZS, polarity were fine. When i changed the board it appeared there were two ring circuits.I know the 3 step method of proving a ring final as recommended in bs7671, should i of carried out this test ?Thanks if anyone can help.

Hi there.

Got to be honest here but your post causes me great concern. If you dont know how to carry out basic inspection and testing then you should not be replacing consumer units.

What size MCB's did you use for these circuits as you may have installed 32A MCB onto a 2.5mm radial!!!.

End to end tests to prove a ring circuit are one of the most important tests to do and are one of the first tests I do for obvious reasons (continuity of ring final circuit conductors). You mention you did I/R and Zs tests, what about the R1+R2 readings???

If I were you I'd be straight back round there now!!! carrying out a full Electrical Installation Certificate to make sure what you have done is safe.

Do you intend registering this with LABC???

I apologise if I sound harsh but you seem to lack the knowledge needed and may be endangering the safety of others.

Hi.

This is a basic list of tests in sequence that you should be doing on completion of a CU upgrade

Test 1 : Continuity of protective conductors
Test 2 : Continuity of bonding conductors
Test 3 : Continuity of Ring final circuit conductors
Test 4 : Insulation resistance
Test 5 : Polarity testing (dead)
Test 6 : Polarity testing (live)
Test 6 : Earth fault loop impedance
Test 7 : Prospective fault current (PEFC + PSCC)
Test 8 : Functional test
