Discuss Has the 'Respected Member' tag had its day? in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Further catering to snowflakes is a possibility if you take this to its logical extreme would be a consequence of over regulation. As well I am mature and have had my moments of acerbity directed at me/my words and I can take it on the chin I really don't feel I need you to save me. I can withdraw or redact as a fail safe. So getting the balance right is no doubt a tricky thing!

I see this principally as an electricians forum for ....electricians. While it may say in the blurb advice forum it is not. For two reasons; 1. those wishing to advise can only go so far and we are stuck at invariably "get an electrician"
2. Suspicion on motives of OP and cynicism often result in upset OPs'. The main body is electricians talking with other electricians. Of course on your part @Dan it would never do to keep it just electricians as the forum membership would be too small for you to attract sponsors I guess. So you have to entice in a wider audience. So you have electricians who are not necessarily diplomats and saints just ordinary tradesmen sometimes behaving in an unpleasant manner. I don't think there is any way to regulate that dynamic as sure you can auto ban, but like the hydras head ten more will appear to replace the nasty ones.
Perhaps you could have it set up so that if people downvote or put a strike against an answer 5 (10??) times the post auto disappears, along with your auto ban then the poster would disappear? This would releive your moderators and allow a natural justice to prevail??? Pertinent to which I have had posts removed not for being rude but too much information. So if I did that three times do I get an auto ban?
That's not the case. It isn't about sponsors. It's certainly about making sure it's not for the few though.

Well thought out post.

Food for thought.

The tag though? Is it right? You're saying yes then?

Be nice or sod off.

New members shouldn't be treated with kid gloves.

There was a person on here a week ago crying about a previous electrician who did a botch job.

It later transpired that they were scrimping on every penny and kept whining how they were a victim.

After about 4 pages of being politely told to get a spark in, the forum collectively told this poster to sod off.

Behave lol - just saying snowflake and you're confirming to somebody else's theory. Daily mail reader by chance?

Ok so (speaking from my box:confused:) Does "a member" get banned if their post is removed three times for reasons other than being rude @Dan? I can see how that original question may have been misunderstood.

That was tongue in cheek as well as fact btw. :)

I'm not here to cause a stir.

I am here to fix an issue that isn't being fixed it's self.

That's all.

Help me help you. It's not just a case of new DIYers.

It's new sparks. And trainees. They aren't looking up to you like you think they are.

We have tripled in size since we last had this argument over a year ago. And it's the same dozen arguing back. I've installed the ejector button now. Just pull the rope and do us all a favour.

You can make a facebook group for free and not have to deal with newbies. You can ban them all yourself. Why don't you just do that and leave the forum for the sound blokes?

Aye but who are the 'sound blokes'
New posters/members....who do you believe or trust? As rap says, some are just out for 'doing' the trade because they need a way to do things themselves.
Even Sky have jumped and decided to look after their long term members. We've already lost one valued member...... although I didn't always agree with Spin, he certainly new his stuff.
If people come out with rubbish, often dangerous, others should be able to tell them so…….IMO.

I’m sure @Dan could make it happen, solves everything in my eyes, new/1 question posters who probably ain’t used to building site etiquette are safe n sound and the regulars continue in our blissful haze :)..........

FREE THE @telectrix ONE!....

Always given me sound advice without being aggressive ;)

Edit.....especially if you lucky enough to catch him sober :tearsofjoy:

Shouldn't that be #freethetelrespectix ?:p

Personally I think titles more liking to member’s experience would be suited. ‘Time-Served’, ‘10+ years Experience’, ‘Short Course Qualified’.

But then you'll get the 6WWs complaining they're being victimised, no? I'll admit if I had the cash-on-hip I'd go down that route but in a profession that works better on/with experience, college/apprenticeship seemed the better offering.

Bow to your respected member you scum bag !

See - I think those who are saying electrical trainee, and whatnot are the ones that need to move on. We did that in the naughties. It's 9 frigging years latter and we still haven't accepted that it's a hard trade to get into as an existing skilled worker. So there are going to be half a dozen ways into it.

If it's staying, it needs another name. And half the people who have it need it taking off them.

Those with the mentor tag that aren't being professional on here need to lose that too perhaps?

And then maybe we step back let the forum run and see what complains come in again over a few months and see how new users are reacting to it.

I do backup the forum members you know. When the newbie member is out of line there's no way I back them up, they're probably other forums winding this one up and know which strings to pull.

And similar to the plumbing forum, DIY trying to touch Gas and get advice on that, it just can't be done. That brings me legal issues. So I'd never backup a DIYer whos attempting to touch something they shouldn't.

But there's a way we go about it. I know it's tiring when you clock a DIYer time after time and tell them get a sparks in, and you get cocky.

But ideally - we want them to use a sparks from this forum. So when I've sorted the directory out again, we want to be professional, and link them to that so one of our guy gets the job.

There's just a way to go about it. And again I'll say it, this isn't reddit or facebook. You can't just say what you want. Not all the time anyway.

Food for thought.

There is a huge distinction between two things you have mentioned there that, as a non electrical worker, you may not be aware of.

Existing skilled workers getting qualified is completely different. Routes exist for them to apply previous quals and to study towards NVQ3 level. Compressed courses also exist to deliver the proper quals in a short period on a full time basis. These are typically a few months but deliver the same study hours as a one day a week course over several years and result in the same quals.

Electrical Trainee courses welcome in anyone with no experience and deliver a collection of add on courses that are easily delivered and passed to provide the illusion of competence through numerous certificates. These courses would not necesarilly aid an experienced worker getting the quals they need to further their career.

So maybe that needs noting via badges. And perhaps even split them off into different forums altogether. At point of registration.

Maybe a drop down box. So they can't pick more than one. And can't change it once registered...?

LOL, I thought we were getting rid of badges ?

I think people filling out their profiles with achieved quals and experience is enough to inform others really.
The point of my post was that the Electrical Trainee moniker refers to a specific thing, and not all short courses or candidates.

So you may have noticed that you have received a shiny new Badge with the title Respected Member.
We the staff just thought we would send you a pm to explain it's meaning.
For a while now we have been trying to think of a way to thank certain members for all the good work they do on the forum, whether that be helping out newcomers or lending a hand in the trainee forum or just being an all round decent and helpful member.
We are pleased to let you know that we think you are one of those members and thought it only right that you received the recognition you deserve, the Respected member badge is just a small token of our appreciation for everything you do.
It's also important to know that there will only be a select few that get this status and that we won't be handing them out like sweets.
We also have a few other things we are discussing for you and the other members we choose, but all in good time!!!!
So for now enjoy your new Badge and title and we will be in touch soon.
Best regards
The Staff.

This was the message sent when the respected member badge was created. So it was created for a reason I presume.

For me, doesn't really matter. Having it will not change how or what I post.

I'm just asking. I'll put in place what the forum needs as a whole. But I'm trying to point out it's not for just "respected" members. It's for everybody who wants to use it.

If more badges are needed that's fine. I personally hate them for the reasons above. Buy the trusted tag surely has had its day. Just the wording is not very 2019.

We must be able come up with something better. There are 40k members here. If not more (I haven't looked for a bit).

Deleted again and again and again

I would like a Electrical Trainee badge please:).
In fact I would like it to say 'respected Electrical Trainee member'.

It's really clear which members screw this place up. Press the ejector button maybe, you don't need to be here.

I am lonely and have no life.... I welcome any flag.... or attention..

Some of the tags could be a bit confusing like
Solar Guru
Electrician Arms
Forum Mentor
Solar guru = someone who knows more than most about Solar.
Electricians Arms = Somewhere to gossip, most people seem able to get in.
Forum Mentor = More likely than not they know what they are talking about.

Who has deleted what?

Some bullsh11t post?

You want it stay on the forum do you?
I did Dan don't worry about it, please, I wrote something and thought better of it as carp so deleted it, not a problem for you is it?

Is Forum Mentor not for the Trainees part of the Forum? (A Mentor for Trainee's rather than a Trainee Mentor)
Solar Guru implies that the person knows more than most working in that sector know about Solar

What tag(s) would show for a Respected Member, who has Electrician Arms access, is a Forum Mentor, a Solar Guru, and the one for Alarms CCTV etc as well?o_O

Wazzup -- Anthony Bragg was saying something similar ...
This bad weather -turned my milk today ...
Chill pills needed all round !
( Public facing forums ..are that )

Nothing wrong mate... Just me being a muppet... I'm always happy..
If I had cheesecake I would be a lot happier though...

Who cares what our badge says, my advice is to have fun without abusing anyone and just give advice, if like me you get annoyed at silly posts be like me now a days, just don’t reply, I would ask dan and the team to allow banter in the arms though, life is too short without a laugh, let’s face it, we can ignore posts, there isn’t a gun to our head saying we have to help

Where’s my mate GMES? Has the hairy guy got lost?
