Hi All,

New member here, getting some major electrical work done at my family home with a full renovation. I am fairly competent when it comes to electricals/tech but in no way shape or form am i an electrician or remotely close to leaving that to the specialists. I am in another place whilst the renovation happens and i bought a shelly 2.5 (2 channel relay for smart lighting) to see how it works and if its worth me installing. The wiring diagram is below:

I am fairly confident as to how i wire this shelly up, as simple as neutral from back box into N, two wires from SW1 and SW2 into Switched on a light switch (L2 on the two switches), 01 and 02 to the two Light connections (wires that were originally in L1 on the light switches) and L is the live from switch (bridged to connect both) or if two lives, one into each.

I have opened up my light switch and i am now very confused as all cables are brown and wiring seems weird. Images attached.

Im confused what is what. The earth connections are on the backbox so nothing to be done. The neutrals (4x blue ones) go into a chocoblock (unsure why there are 4 but ok as i just need to add a blue from the chocobloc to N on Shelly. Im more confused on the Live wires on my 2gang1way switch.

I can see there are two switches next to each other (in Y and reverse Y order). On the Left hand side at the top i have one wire in L1 (which i assume is LIVE) and another going into L2 at the bottom on the left (which i assume is switched live to bulb 1). Correct me if i am mistaken here.

On the right i have a wire into L2 at the top right which i assume is the switched live (to bulb 2). I then have L1 at the bottom right (which i assume is LIVE). Again correct me if i am wrong here.

First, am i correct on the above, and secondly, why is L1 (top left) which is assume is LIVE for switch one connected to L2 (top right) which i assume is SWITCHED LIVE for switch 2?

Any wiring help would be appreciated. Just want to wire up to see how the unit works and if worthwhile asking electricians to install in my main house.

Thanks in Advance!

The top two browns with the link between them are the line loop (line in, line out). The two browns at the bottom are separate feeds to each light. The four blues are neutral in, neutral out and two separate neutrals for each light.

Thanks so much! So the top two are not Live to Switched Live but rather the TWO LIVES. One is Line in, looped to provide power for the Line in on the second switch and other cable is LINE OUT to maybe another switch somewhere etc? Bottom ones make sense feeds to each light.

So how would i go about wiring the Shelly in this scenario?

1) Add a neutral from the Blue chockblock into N on Shelly?
2) Add Wire from SW1 on shelly to L2 (left hand side) on switch?
3) Add the wire currently in L2 on switch on the left to O1 on Shelly?
4) Add wire From L (RHS on shelly) into Chocoblock
5) Connect Wire L1 on LHS switch to L (RHS) on shelly) ? - UNSURE HERE?
6) Connect Wire L2 on RHS switch to L (LHS) on shelly) ? - UNSURE HERE?
7) Connect LOOP to both L's on Shelly? - UNSURE Here
8) Add the wire currently in L1on switch on the right to O2 on Shelly?
9) 2) Add Wire from SW2 on shelly to L1 (Right hand side) on switch?

Like the below?

the 2 darker browns go int the shelly terminals marked L with a link between them. then (i think, not having seen this shelly thing ) each of the lighter browns go into SW1 and SW2 respectively. then you need a link from the N terminal block to N of the shelly. don't know what 01 and 02 are. see manufacturers instructions if you've not already binned them.

02 and 02 are the separate feeds to each light. I believe my understanding is correct I’m just unsure on how to connect up to the L’s?

so what are SW1 and SW2? as mt last post, the 2 darker browns are the perm.L's and go into the terminals marked L with them linked as in your diagram. the other lighter browns will the each go into 01 and 02. .

The two lighter browns go into 01 and 02.
The now empty terminals on the switch are linked to SW1 and SW2. Assuming you are keeping the switch as in the shelly diagram?
Link the two L's together and to the dark browns.
N as said.
By the way, is there enough room in the box for your Shelly?

think i'm seeing this now. is it that this shelly has the existing switch still in circuit? i thought it was instead of the existing switch, as never herd of shelly. apart from that long dead poet.

Thanks, yes I will be keeping the wall switch. Agree tee 01 and 02. Agree also re SW1 and SW2. neutral just to the chocobloc already in the back box.

still a bit confused on the live. Do I connect L1 on LHS in existing switch which I assume is permanent live into L on Shelly. Then loop both L on shelly. Then loop L1 and L2 as is currently is on the switch. And the final dark brown wire still stays in L2 right hand side of switch as it is line out?

so Shelly looks like the below and top half of the switch has those two inputs from Shelly as well as one cable coming out from L2 at the top right which is existing line out?

Leave the Live connections in the top of the switch, link from one or other to the Shelly. Or use a 5 way Wago and put the lives into that, one out to switch and one to Shelly with their links.
The SW1 & 2 replace the bottom connections in the switch, and the two browns that come out go into 01 & 02.
I would also replace the Neutral choc block with a 5 way Wago.
I think you'll need to replace the back box with a deeper one to avoid crushing the wires, with resultant likelihood of a fault.

Thanks Timbo. One question, the 5 way wag2 you said one out to switch but surely it is two out to switch? One to L1 on switch on left and one to l2 to switch on right. Not going to use Wago but link from one live into Shelly. Could you kindly confirm the below is correct pls?

what has caused cunfusion here is the fact that the permanent L's go into L1 on 1 switch and L2 on the other. it's conventional to wire lives into the L1 terminals and theswitch lives in the L2's.

100% this is why I was confused but looking back at it, it’s just a one way one gang combined so makes no difference whether they use L1 or l2 - they just didn’t follow convention. In that case there are multiple ways the switch could be wired but I’ll follow the simplest.

Can someone confirm my diagram above is correct pls?

Not sure about the back box it seems 30mm deep and might be very tight but main thing is getting the wiring right first!

thanks in advance for everybody’s help!

So... I'm guessing that the action of the switches is simply a trigger to do the opposite of whatever the existing state is ? I.e. they are not acting as you'd normally expect a switch to act ? Or does that "Shelly 2.5" need 'push to make' switches ??

your diagram in post #11 is correct. when connecting, make sure there's no copper showing at the terminals .i.e. insulation tight into the terminal.

Exactly yes, it’s a smart relay through WiFi so I can still use the wall switch if needed. Will be using wago connectors aswell as much easier.
