3 altogether - 1 in the hall downstairs and 2 on the landingIt sounds like an intermediate switch but they are normally L1, L1, L2 and L2.
How many switches control the light it is switching.
As above "Intermediate"I assume this is a 1 gang 3 way switch? If not what is it? Where can I get one?
At the box where you are replacing the switch, I'd expect one twin cable coming from the hall switch, and another twin coming from the other landing switch. Thanks both, I’ll give an intermediate a try

I'd put one twin cable in the bottom of the switch, and the other in the top, doesn't matter which way round.
Are the conductors of each twin cable really blue and red? I'd expect black and red, or blue and brown!
Yes, yes. Silly me - didn't think of thatCould be an old 3 core, with yellow in a connector - hopefully with an earth there too.
