lighting circuit

Hi, this is quite an easy one. I'm wiring the upstairs landing light and downstairs hall light. The switch on the landing needs to control the landing and hall light and the downstairs switch needs to control the landing, hall and outside light. I've wired the upstairs lights and included the landing light (without 3 core to switch). I think there are a couple of different ways of doing this and was wondering what would be the best. Any help?

Wire the landing light as a normal two way arrangement, but link the hall light with a 3 core to pick up a N,L and SL, the outside light could be controlled by a one way switch, as you only want it to operate from the hallway, in effect you would have a two way switch upstairs and a two gang two way down stairs, one of the switches on this plate will control the outside light, the other will be part of the two way arrangement, hope this is clear, of course we don't know what is in situ at present.

If you need independent control of all lights individually with two way switching for hall and landing then a three gang two way switch downstairs and a two gang two way switch upstairs would be needed.
One of the three gang would be used as a one way switch for outside.

What you want to do is draw a diagram of how a 2 way lighting circuit works , show us what you have already installed and post you're replies...

Thanks, I drew it up on Friday after work and wanted to check it before I wire it and my boss beats me for doing it wrong! I've looked it up on the net for confirmation but no luck really. can I wire the upstairs and downstairs light on the same circuit Taking a l n and E through the switches or do I just take a 3 core down from the upstairs switch to the hall switch making them common l1 and l2? I've never wired a 3 way lighting circuit before and not learnt much of it at college yet.

This is one possible option, you should be aware that this is two sets of two way switching and one set of one way switching.
This diagram feeds the switches for the downstairs lighting from the downstairs circuit and provide three plate switching for the upstairs lighting from the upstairs circuit, so as not to mix them up.

If you post up your diagram (you may need to ask the moderators for permission to post pictures) then we can advise accordingly.

Yeah that's similar to how I've done it. I was going to link out the commons and run the neutral direct to the light rather than through the switch.

richard's way is better as you'll be using T/E.
