Hello everyone. I am looking for some advice. I am 27 years old and and currently studying level 2 electrical installations and will be doing level 3 after. I am not in the trade as this is a complete career change for me. What is the best way to gain valuable hands on experience? Due to circumstances, ideally this would be on weekends. Thank you in advance. Matt

Hi Matt and welcome to the forum.

Hi Matt welcome, can't really advise as I qualified before you were born, so I am not reaally up to date on all these new courses, but good luck all the same.

Welcome to the forum.

Finding just weekend work for training will be hard to do, you would have to hope to get lucky with a busy electrician who is prepared to spend time training as well.

You might be able to get a few jobs with agencies as a labourer at first and then progress on to helping out, but the learning curve would be a bit steep.

Welcome, I started doing weekends and school holidays, with a small contractor it was absolutely valuable, 37years later the rest is history. Good luck to you.

I was in the same situation as you and was lucky enough to find a company looking to take on an electrical improver. I explained I have zero hands on experience in the trade, but as a former holiday park maintenance manager I'm quite experienced in using hand and power tools, using my own initiative and the theory side of things. 6 weeks later I think I'm doing pretty well, even been sent out alone for the first time the other day (just cable slinging in preparation for a sub board), and I've practically rewired and tested an industrial unit (3ph & single phase boards) by myself with a little guidance.
I was starting to think I'd never get my foot in the door but keep looking and asking and something will come up :)
