Discuss Price for fault finding? ££ in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

Depends on the nature of the fault.
If its something that looks easy to pin down E.g light not working then I’ll just quote to fix it.
If not, I’ll say job 1 is to find and prove the fault. I’ll spend up to two hours and report back. In most cases I can demonstrate progress within two hours.
Then the discussion can start about which aspect of the house to destroy to fix it!

This is the crucial part that the customer needs making aware imo

I had one recently, lights kept tripping rcd. I managed to trace the fault to the flat roof extension within my first 2 chargeable hour. Second hour I had found and disconnected the feed to the extension and managed to get about 60% of the lights back on.
Customer then agreed for me to get medieval on the flat ceiling with my hammer to find the dodgy wiring.
About 2 further hours and 6 holes later I managed to find some cables which a squirral had chewed through right down to the bare cores.

My bill came to 4 hours labour plus some new cable and wago boxes

I expect the bill to reboard and skim the ceiling will be considerably more than my 400 quid
