Hi Guys, does anybody know what the fundemental difference is between a type 1 rcd in relation to a normal domestic type to bs 61008. These have been mentioned for supplies to electric vehicle chargers....?
Many thanks in advance ))

Do you have a link to this info'

I know of type A and B etc RCD's but need to confirm your sources here to comment.

I can understand the need for a specific type of rcd because dc pollution due to a fault into the AC lines can saturate the RCD's magnetic circuitry and make it unable to see a genuine fault and not normally an issue for the standard applications a RCD is used for by most sparkies.

This is also an issue with harmonics on circuits as this can also blind rcd's to genuine faults.

.Type A are for use in AC electrical circuits feeding loads which can generate pulsed wave forms on the AC supply.

.Type AC are for use in AC electrical circuits feeding loads which do not interfere with the standard AC supply.

.Type B are For use in AC electrical circuits feeding loads which can generate AC & DC leakage currents.

Type A RCD's are preferred with the use of electric vehicle chargers because it has the ability to detect pulsed DC. This is important in case a fault occurs within the battery or inverter system within the vehicle.
