Hello all.
Male. 52. On scrap heap.
Thinking about training as a sparks but need advice on self funded training/providers near Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. It’s a minefield out there and I know I’ll have to work for myself as I know no one will take me on at my age even though I know companies are desperate for sparks/security installers. Any thoughts really appreciated. Thanks.

How about a part-time college course studying your level 2 & level 3.

This will teach you all the fundamental's. And IMHO as long as you're proper keen, and keen to learn nothing is stopping you taking it a lot further.

I concurr with the above poster, Alarms, CCTV, Door entry systems. Think BMS, IoT, VOIP. How's you computer skills?
A basic training to level 3, practical experience working along side a trained person.

I’m also looking at change of career, I live in Loughton not too far from you, ableskills in south east London looks like a good choice,
Also I saw Skills 4 Life Academy which is in E4, much closer to me but seen good reviews on ableskills, I’m thinking of the course level 2 and level 3 (2365) it’s a bit expensive but I can’t go college for few years as I have family expenses and mortgage, I was wounding after I pass the course would I be able to start work straight away, 34years old,

You will be an electricians mate & would be on mates wages whether you have the level 2 and 3 or not. Some may pay more but experience will be key when it come to pay.

Nothing stopping you now applying to be a mate. Doing this will be beneficial in the long run.

The 2365 is the fundamental knowledge from the basics into calculations, science, testing, designing etc. Those who complete this will more then likely go on to do their NVQ where they will have to be in work as the NVQ will involve filling in your own portfolio to the correct standards.
Then the last exam of all will be the AM2

Go down the college route if you can as it will be a lot cheaper and its only a couple of evenings a week and every other Saturday.

Best of luck.

Enthusiasm is defiantly a positive.

Just be prepared that there is no quick fix to become an electrican, its a long old road. There are people on this forum who have many years experience but on the odd day they may even ask for different opinions from other qualified experienced members.

I believe you can accomplish what you like as long as you're prepared to put as much ground work in as possible.

I would suggest that you get yourself onto a JTL sponsered course. Its usually 3 years backed up by a trainee apprentice style work placement.
Its the best you'll likely to find unless you are able to work for a company with its own training schedule.
