Hello, my house was built in the 1950s and every time I look behind a wall plate the wiring isn’t how it’s shown in any DIY book I’ve read. I’m trying to replace a switch with an LED-friendly one. Wall j-box has two cables coming in, one has 2 wires and the other has a 3rd wire that’s red. The white wires are tied together, the black wires are together with a pigtail leading to the switch. The red wire also led to switch. See photos for better description.

The ceiling j-box has 3 cables. One is the 3-wire cable with red wire. The other 2 cables have their black wires tied together and white wires together but the white pigtails to the fixture and the lone red also to the fixture.

My new switch has 3 wires: red, black, and white. How do I connect to the wall j-box? Do I need to tie into the white wire bundle?

Your new switch is black for the hot, white for the neutral and red is your load which will be for the light. If you need any other advice let us know.

Thank you. I was confused because the old switch wasn’t using the neutral wire at all but I just added a pigtail off of those for the new switch.
