I currently have some 12v outdoor lights which have a plug with a built in transformer.

I would like these to turn on and off without having to go outside so ideally would like to have them on a timer but not sure of the best way to incorporate this while keeping it looking presentable.

Socket lid won't close either with them plugged in due to the size of the plug.

Any suggestions?

In my (limited) experience, the plug/transformer/adapter is often not to be used outdoors, and is labelled as such. Maybe yours is IP rated? You could plug the adapter into a timer module indoors somewhere, and extent the low voltage cable if needed (keeping the polarity the same), either using a waterproof connector, or crimps and heat-shrink sleeving, or whatever bodge takes your fancy!
