Teeside HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Hi Guys

I recently started the HNC in electrical and electronic engineering in online learning through teeside university. Im hoping someone on this is in the same boat as me. First assignment ENS-1-TMA already has me struggling as it is not electrically based. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Gonna be a long 18months or so!

im starting HNC in electrical engineering in Sept, on day release. Ill prob be [posting on here a lot to get different views ect, but ill also have regularv access to others views on the course, which i can relay. Im really lloking fiorward to the challenge. Especially the maths! gulp.
Which module is TMA 1?

TMA 1 is engineer science assignment 1, it deals with static engineering systems etc. Very different to what I'm used to, no electrical involved as of yet. If you are doing day release with a college I have a feeling your course structure will be quite different?

maybe mate, but the fundamental science and theory is the same, and as its the same course, the syllabus will be similar too. Obviously we can choose different modules, but im sure that the core ones are the same.

Yeah your probably right. Day release is the way to go I reckon, unfortunately I just couldn't get the time off from work. Yeah I think engineering science will be the trickiest, if like me your coming from all electrical background! At least there's some one on here I can relate too, it'll be a tough course I reckon.

i think theres a few of us on here, most of whom who are doing the Colu route. I was very very lucky tha my company are paying for me to do it, with a transition to the office at the end of it!

Ive been thinking about if for ages, buit i decided that i would struggle to focus properly, and that i would gain more by day release.

It is very equation heavy, I literally just started the first assignment this week! already tricky!

Judging by your location, It might be more beneficial to you? Oil rigs? Nah luckily enough did not have to do maths bridging module.

Yeah a lot of transposing equations so far. The techniques needed for answers are tricky, they teach you small parts of answers throughout the notes, then in the assignment you are required to combine different answer techniques. Interesting though.

Yeah I am looking a move into oil and gas hopefully next year. Compex is also on the list aswell.

sounds like you've got a plan in place, would love to do compex myself, have a friend works for micropack and that kinda work seems really interesting! Completely different industry.

I completed the HNC Electrical/Electronic engineering course on day release as part of my apprenticeship about 5 years ago. Id recommend looking at the engineering books by John Bird. I think the ones i used were the electrical circuit theory and technology and higher engineering mathematics books. Just done a quick search and there are new editions of these books available now, good luck!

Newry tech 6-10 at night, working out at 700 pound for the two years. Gonna be a lot of work due to an 8-5 day but it will be worth it in the end!!

Wouldn't suit most, them hours. Thats not a bad price though, does that include edexcel registration fee and exam fee's? Well all I can say is the best of luck with it buddy, and if your ever stuck just give me a shout....

That's the whole works mate, and if your making less than 16000 a year you can get a grant to over the cost of the course.

Having just upgraded my 2330 to 17[SUP]th[/SUP] Edition my mate directed me to this forum and by chance I came across your post. I too am doing my HNC Elec Eng through Teesside Uni and currently working on my first TMA in Engineering Science. Must admit I’m struggling with the mechanical side of things myself. Although you’re probably way more ahead than me I’m up for being a study buddy. Could do with a hand to be honest.

Gents, Ive started the elect HNC with teesside and am doing it distance learning so i feel your pain!!!! doing static systems at the moment and finding the course material not easy to follow im on Q3 of TMA1 so far.......... I also had to do the bridging course and that was mental ive been out of study for 10 years or so. Happy to help out if i can.

hi, sparky. can you tell me how this 'distance learning' thing works? do you ever have to attend college or, are the modules completed at home and sent to teesside via email? do you ever see a tutor? if not, how do you receive tuition? are there any exams, and if so, will you take them locally?

i've been thinking about what to do next, and hnc/d seems the logical step. my default choice would be the local college, where the hnd is available part time, but this teesside option has got me thinking.

by the way, the maths scares me to death! i've got the sixth edition of k.a. stroud's engineering mathematics and it really is above and beyond anything that i've done with C & G. i'll definitely have to do a bridging course. cheers mate.

p.s. did you know that the reg's aren't retrospective??? :rockon2: :rolleyes4:

No mate never attend college, all tuition is sent out by post 3 large folders of notes for each module. Each module is split into tutor marked assignments (TMA) which are completed at home an emailed the tutor regarding that particular TMA. No practical involved buddy! At the end of each module you have a tutor-student interview which I think is over the phone although I havnt had one yet! To honest mate it is tricky but it suits me down to the ground with work any everything else going on! I got away with not having to do the bridging course luckily enough!

And yes, I heard something about the regulations not being retrospective or something....lol.

Im in the exact same boat, currently doing TMA1 in Engineering science and the column question has done me, What actually is the diametre of the column? I see can see its 10mm across but is it circular or square:/ or am I completly way of the mark and looking at the drawing incorrectly? any help would be greatly appreciated

Ive been away for a bit and just back on.......You may have done it by now. I took it to be a circular column with a wall thickness of 10mm the questions had me lost for a while. Ive submitted the TMA 1 but need to wait untill i finnish the rest of them to see if i was right

well that is easy for some people under the age of 21, you get college courses for free so no cost, and saving money helps do you really need a £30 to £70 contact for a lastest moblie

Iv been interested in a course like this for a while got some responses when i posted around 6 months or so ago. But i can only find distance learning or day release. Block release wouldmbe better for me as i work away all the time so be easier to take a week off rather than one day.

anyone know of any block courses for higher education degree or hnc etc

just joined this thread, i too am doing the hnc distance learning at tees. I completed the 1st TMA for engineering science in Oct last year, received a distinction and got all the questions correct. If you guys get stuck i will try and point you in the right direction. Longy you might have it by now but the question for the column, it is cylindrical because it provides a diameter measurement.
I'm hopefully starting TMA 2 in the next week or so.

found it extremely boring sm75k, which meant I could hardly be arsed with learning it, but I struggled on and got me a distinction
