Discuss The Adult Apprenticeship Funding Scandal in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

The money just is not there to fund everyone, all of the time I am afraid. Apprenticeships should be for 16-21 year olds. If you want to change careers at your age, you should expect to pay for it.

There is only so much money available and everyone can't get whatever training they want FOC.

Might not be what you want to here, but I agree with the policy. We need to get the young back to work.
So if you're 22 you're screwed? It needs to be more variable mate. You can't say that just because someone is outside of a certain range that we don't care about them anymore. Maybe there should be some graduation in the funding.(Btw it's spelt hear not here)

Quite clearly the op has gone through the self funding process . What I got from the letter was he wants a level playing field were he can atleast get an interview . To the op keep going mate. Yes it is a very long process but the more you network and get your name around the local sparks something will come up.

It's not that we don't care about them when they reach 22. We just can't fund everyone, all of the time. Maybe it's not fair... But life isn't.

I pay enough tax as it is. Any more government funding and I will be retraining.

Why should a mature person that is in employment expect funding to change profession?
Despite my thoughts on a lot of youngsters, they should be the ones to receive assistance.

A smidge of ageism there you old barstward!

Anyone of any age should be entitled to funding for further education, but I'll back that up with...
assuming they can satisfy entry requirements, and I don't mean the size of the applicants wallet!

you seem to have your finger on the button..........self employment!!!

OK for domestic work.

This country needs industrial electricians. And I’m afraid not many self employed will find their way in. Where is the training for that? It lies in the hands of the manufacturing companies. The incentives are needed there.

Every street will be able to have its own electrician soon if the training providers and scams are allowed to run unchecked.

The letter needs to be shorter and more concise - a busy man like Vince Cable isn't going to read through all of that.
I do agree that training should be made available for those over, say, 22; I worked in a pub until I was 21 and there was no way I could have saved up the amount needed for training while working on minimum wage.
If you expect everyone to know what they want to do and successfully get an apprenticeship straight after school then who do you expect to work in pubs, shops and call centres?
Then there are those who drop out of apprenticeships, and those who do an apprenticeship and waste it by changing career. There seem to be plenty of courses to help people with their language and maths when they just messed about at school disrupting learning for everybody else, but no help for someone who never had the chance of an apprenticeship or someone who had a rubbish one.

the only reason there is any funding is because most young people wouldnt be able to fund there own training but an older guy is expected to have some savings to fund there own education.

next you guys are going to complain about how its not fair university is free in Scotland but not in England etc.
