Hi guys. I’ve bagged myself a new job fitting EV points, mainly commercially but with bits of domestic too. I haven’t accepted it yet, got to discuss a few things before I sign any contracts. I’ve only fitted one before, was a Rolec unit, nice and straight forward, needed two rods before I could get a decent reading on the earth but other than that it went swimmingly.

just wondering if there are any things that can catch you out whilst installing them? Need to know if there’s anything I need to be aware of.

let me know guys,
Cheers.

PS - the employer is paying for me to do the EV course, I am aware of that.

If your doing the course it will cover the pit falls. There are too numerous to mention. It’s really not as straight forward as people think.

biggest one is not being able to touch metal parts or electrical fittings attached to the house and touch the vehicle while it’s charging if the earthing systems do not match. There is more to it than that, but its the general gist.

I have not got involved in installing any to date as EV charger installs quickly gained a reputation as being a poor money earner.
If I do start on them I will never use any that don't come with an Open PEN sensor. Sinking earth rods is something I hate (especially in urban areas). I always feel like saying a silent prayer with every smack of the lump hammer. Can never be sure of what's buried in the soil.

For EV chargers to be profitable you need to stick with ones that do not need an earth rod, ideally built in RCD protection and if necessary do not need an ethernet cable.
Also avoid Rolec, far too many of them have iffy rcbos that melt. no longer touch them, stick with Andersen, Myenergi and Pod Point.
Took me a while to get a system set up but average profit for an EV charger install is £300 after all costs. which aint bad for something that typically takes 4-5 hours
