I think in the UK your fan requires a 2-pole isolator by the regulations but just wait for one of your fellow countrymen to clarify.

I believe your right, regs say so, to inspect the fan safely. So if i wire the switch live into the fan and leave the perm live capped off, will that cause the fan to shut off when the light switch is turned off ? Due to the switch live comming from the common block in the light fixture which in turn is only live when the light switch is turned on ?

I'm frowning on this thread. :95:

We should not be giving out specific instructions like this when clearly the OP is struggling.

You will need a dp isolator for maintance. You could always have a seperate pull sw for fan to work independently from light.

I'd disagree on this particular one, the OP has shown a reasonable level of understanding of the lighting circuit and the fan itself and hasn't show any concerning signs of lack of awareness of safety issues. His confusion about the capacitor wiring I can work with. There's many electricians considered legally competent who aren't familiar with CSR motor wiring schemes.

And I disagree with you as well then. This forum should not be dishing out this level of information.

Murdoch, if you saying I should have a fully qualified electrican to come and wire this fan please say so. I would rather pay the money than be unsafe. I have 4 children in my home. If I were that ignorant I would have just bodged the job rather than ask the professionals. Im not here to pretend I'm a spark, I'm simply asking for their help.

The DIY area was created to give limited ideas to DIYers - not pass out detailed information. Just saying - this forum is aimed at the professionals. Just saying

If you've got specific concerns about the job he's doing or the way he's proposing to do it you're more than welcome to highlight them.

I'm not sure what you mean by limited ideas but the questions asked have been very specific.

I understand the concern any good electrician would have. Anyone that assumes electrical tasks are not to be taken seriously is asking for trouble. ( Hense the justifed REGS ).

But in my defense I am a qualified engineer. I have been a ceiling fixer on site for almost 15 years. And although it isn't much, I do still have my city & guilds 236 in Electrical installations.

But your concern for my safety is very much appreciated.

Okay I've opened a thread in the 3000+ forum to discuss the politics of DIY advice. It's a bit rude to hijack this thread so please rather comment there.

Marvo I appreciate your help. I think I will pay someone to do it. Sorry to bother you all.

No problem and you're welcome.

If you've got doubts and given that a bathroom is a high risk location then getting professional assistance would be a wise move. If you can give an idea of your location one of the established members may be able to assist you.
