From the picture you can see that there is a brown wire not connected to anything. Does anyone know what that’s for?
 
At a guess I'd say it has broken off from the live connection to the lampholder.
 
I would suggest you get an electrician to have a look at that mess, it could potentially be a dangerous situation to have those wires hanging loose.
