Discuss Why do Megger MT1700 Teaters Measure IR to 999 Megohms in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

because they can.
i have a megger IR/continuity tester ( forgot the model no.) that reads on IR in Gig ohms.

so its not to comply with new regs or anything its just a manufacture quirk.

Just different manufacturers with different ideas. And don't forget, the accuracy at then top end of the scale may not be as good as down at the 'reasonable end'. They could design the machine to read up to 999G if they wanted, but obviously as the range gets higher, it is more and more difficult to design the electronics to do it, and there's no real point in day to day electrical testing.

We use Chauvin Arnoux 5kv units that measures to 10T

This seems to have turned into a willy waving contest.
I used to use a Kewtech KT65 which tests at 250v up to 199MΩ; and at 500v up to 900MΩ, not that I consider it anything to shout about
The kt64 goes up to 1999 mega ohms at 500v test. But I'm not bragging.

I normally put greater than 199 meg on cert if it goes over that to save on the extra ink used to write the other 9

Unless you are hanging on to the probes at the time. o_O
one of my college tutours had a deep yorkshire accent, he also wore a bumbag, had a ponytail, had a constant look like he was surprised

so obviously in the workshop when words like "megger" "copper" "pliers" "cutters" i would mimic him, got chased around with the tester for a bit but he couldnt catch me , so he got himself a bit of pvc conduit and started hitting me with it.

---- got serious, i told him he had a few seconds to rethink what he was doing otherwise he would be seeing the inside of an ambulance very shortly.
