In electrical engineering, a switch is an electrical component that can disconnect or connect the conducting path in an electrical circuit, interrupting the electric current or diverting it from one conductor to another. The most common type of switch is an electromechanical device consisting of one or more sets of movable electrical contacts connected to external circuits. When a pair of contacts is touching current can pass between them, while when the contacts are separated no current can flow.
Switches are made in many different configurations; they may have multiple sets of contacts controlled by the same knob or actuator, and the contacts may operate simultaneously, sequentially, or alternately. A switch may be operated manually, for example, a light switch or a keyboard button, or may function as a sensing element to sense the position of a machine part, liquid level, pressure, or temperature, such as a thermostat. Many specialized forms exist, such as the toggle switch, rotary switch, mercury switch, push-button switch, reversing switch, relay, and circuit breaker. A common use is control of lighting, where multiple switches may be wired into one circuit to allow convenient control of light fixtures. Switches in high-powered circuits must have special construction to prevent destructive arcing when they are opened.

DPDT switching branch circuit from one breaker to another?

I’m planning a 240V welder circuit in a detached garage with a 100A sub panel. For the 160A or 180A output welders I’m looking at, the conductor can be #10, and a 30A breaker is probably OK, but a 40 would help the duty cycle. Conductor must handle welder's 1eff rating, breaker can be up to...

    DPDT switch burnt while off

Hello, I wired a DPDT switch to my sunroof 12v DC motor. It was working ok and I was able to reverse the polarity of the motor to open and close the sunroof. However days later it started to burn when off, even though I hooked up a 20A fuse before the switch. I don't know if it's a short circuit...

    DPDT switches wired together

Hello, could someone please explain/diagram how to wire two switches (I think DPDT switches are necessary) together so that the electric window in my car can be operated by either switch at any time? (Like when the passenger window of a car works from the driver's switch or from the passenger...

Gunsmith needs to wire a DPDT switch!

Hello from Kent, I have forgotten the tiny amount I learned about electrics and I need to wire a DPDT switch to control a 230V 50Hz synchronous motor and just haven't a clue and don't fancy killing myself. Very much DIY electrics but I'd appreciate any help (I have project box, gland, soldering...

    DPDT Switch

Hi there, Does anybody know where I could get hold of a double-pole double-throw switch (also known as a four-way-switch, crossover switch and change over switch)? I would like to control a set of lights with three switches, and it is possible by using two SPDT switches at each end (like in a...
