Was asked to check the quality of work on full rewire. Attached are the pictures I took of yet another shocking installation by a cowboy pretending to be an electrician. The home owner paid £500 and thought he got a good deal what he’s got instead is a death trap.

I'm not saying this is the case here but the worst workmanship I've ever seen was done by a Romanian "sparky".

Be interested the know the nationality of the chap that did this....

Appalling workmanship aside,I’d be concerned that all the materials are actually stolen as well cos I can’t see how at £500 he could make any money on that? Assuming he’s had a stab at the Cu as well......

I think the person that did this, is the sort of person who thinks "well it works, therefore I am an Electrician" seen loads of carp like this on my many trips overseas working with local Lads, supplied by the management as Electricians, because they say they are. A lash up of the highest order, the man with no name would be proud of this.

Another case of a poorly educated customer suckered into a cowboys trap. I find it very difficult to imagine that he made much from the “rewire” at that price.
I’d be issuing an electrical danger notification and as buzz said, isolating the main switch telling the customer that the entire installation was a death trap. I wouldn’t even waste my time trying to do an EICR on that.
IMHO the only way forward is another rewire done properly, it would probably be quicker and more cost effective than actually trying to fix that mess. It is a shame for the occupant that this has happened but really £500 for a whole rewire? You couldn’t even buy a new iphone for that what were they thinking when they said yes?
Also If that’s what you’ve seen so far I’d be worried as to what other nasties are lurking elsewhere hidden away as well.

How can anyone with a brain believe they can get a rewire for £500?

Dunno, but they do. I once recommended a rewire in a property with no cpcs in lighting and rubber cable all over.
"Ooh that sounds expensive, what are we talking, about a grand ?" Said the well educated home owner.
Property is a large 5 bed semi over three floors on the most expensive street in our city.
My mate actually let out an involuntary "Ha!" When he gave us his idea of an estimate.

The guy that did the work was from Spain . The worst bit was the installation was energised and bonding conductor had been cut and left hanging. 8 junction boxes in kitchen area, with no way to access them. Shower and sockets on same circuit. No earth sleeves throughout and no continuity of cpc

Well the bit saying "Enchufez Plant." is either mis spelt Spanish or Portuguese for "socket supply " more or less translated, and the whole thing looks a bit South American, but safer.
Still I don't see anything live you can actually touch, just rather a lot of single insulation, and a feeling they are not used to the bare CPC in T and E. How do the breaker or fuse ratings and cable sizes stack up?

Hi M - strangely I feel that wiring systems are a bit like icebergs, in that only a small % is ever on display. And the bit the installer knew would be seen is likely to be their best efforts  .

Either Spanish or Portugese, badly spelt. I won't condemn hin because of that, because I have seen lots of really good Spanish electrics...
(he lied)

Unfortunately many people have no knowledge of electrics. I neither am nor was an electrician, but when a neighbour asked me (as a schoolboy) to look at the broken cable in his house which they "repaired" but didn't work, I could see the problem. They had basically wrapped all three wires from each end together. At least they had put some tape round it!!

That homeowner paid far less than he should have, that cowboy may be able to milk a cow but failed at milking the customer properly.

I'm a trainee sparky studying for my Level 2 C&G. I have re-wired homes before with my dad and now with my brother in law.
Even I can tell that is a total ---- job.

I might just even show this to my college tutor.
