Hi all, as promised in previous thread update of Access2trade training module (for the background on this check out thread “help needed”).
First thing to say is 10 out of 10, the training facility is brand new but caters for all required news, the only down side is poor lunch time menu, but what was on offer was OK.
There were 13 of us doing the course from a cross section of people including a lass from Scotland, and what a great bunch they all were, sure makes a difference to learning when you are all paying for it yourself.
First day and half was spent in the classroom doing theory then out to the workshop.
Purpose built wooden rooms which became our home for two and a half days.
There we installed a consumer unit, did the earth bonding and then installed and wired a light socket with single switch with a ELV spotlight connected via a junction box and a second light working from 2 switches, this might not sound like much but to 13 newbie’s it was a work of ART?
We then dead tested all circuits for earth loop impendence, Zs etc using a very impressive Megger tester, £800 worth we were told?
Then we connected up to the mains and switched on, or not? But we all pitched in helping each other to sort out all the little niggles.
Then back to the classroom and more studying, more tests and then a brief on are part 2 studying module and what we need to do before we return for the second weeks training.
All in all a cracking week with a great bunch of people and a great bunch of tutors who had all the time in the world to spend with us all, but especially are main tutor Wade a totally top class guy, hope I have him next time.
Have included a photo of my work booth with my lights on, sad but I was chuffed to bits to install it all and see it work.

Regards till next update.

Graham

How old is your son?How much will this course set you back.A lot of the colleges can do all these courses at a fraction of the price that these money making companies offer. If he is still under 19 he should get the courses paid for him:confused:

Re: Access2trade careers

He's just coming up on 21 and looking for an 'instant' qualification. He doesn't want to go down the college route because of the time it takes. ie up to 4 years. As for cost, he's looking at cool £5.4K which seems an awful lot of moolah to me. But then what do I know? I'm only his father.

This is a full time course though...for the 20 days it runs for. It wouldn't be any good for people who can't get time off work to go.

They do evening courses or some companies do weekend courses, how long have you got;)

Re: Access2trade careers

however long it takes :) I couldn't do evening courses, I need an at home thing. I don't get home from work till 7.30, so I'm already tired out from that. I need something I can do during my lunch hours at work & on my days off. I've sent off for some info from them though.

Re: Access2trade careers

Guitar Graham, how are you finding this course? Have you been looking at job prospects for when you finish?

Is there much support during your learning? Considering the course but very wary of the negative posts on some of the forums out there. This is alot of money at the end of the day

Re: Access2trade careers

Hi Sian

found the course content very good, bear in mind we did 6 solid hours a day for 5 days thats 30 hours in 1 week which is like 2 hours a week on an evening course, ie 2 terms to get to where i am now.

Back up is fantastic wether working at home or on the training course.

not looked at jobs, i am looking at working for myself, thinking of starting off doing handyman jobs then picking up minor electrical work as i go along, but i have got my taxi badge so i can put some shifts in to keep the pennies rolling in.

Working full time at the moment so waiting to get my paid holidays out of the way, hopefully get my part P when i do my 2nd module at the end of July then start punting for work on my weekends off and in the evening.

Cheers Graham

Re: Access2trade careers

Hi to all interested my week 2 update?

Monday morning arrive at centre 8.30, quick brief & coffee break then up to the exam room for Part P exam.

Short intro then a practise session to get used to how the programme works then the online exam.

13 out of 14 pass, happy days i pass?

Rest of week we do 6 more AMAs, 1 lad fail 2 and then struggles with resits and the head tutour suggests he goes home and re-studies and comes back and does it again, with no extra cost which i thought was good.

Pratical we hade to install a consumer unit with bondings and then a cooker outlet with socket and a ring main with a a spur socket and then do dead testing and then live testing, recording results and completing a installation certificate.

On Friday afternoon they perpared us for are 3rd weeks training for the 17th edtion with are new books to study including THE BIG RED BOOK and then talked through the ADIABATIC EQUATION you could see people brains runnings out of there ears, then said " its OK its all in the on site guide " then at 4.45 sent us home.

Really enjoyed myself with a great group of people ones again and cant wait to get stuck into my next batch of study.

Regards

Graham

Re: Access2trade careers

Hi
for those interested i have just completed my 2nd training module and i am now Part P quilified.

The week was tuff, arrived at training centre 8.15 in to classroom at 8.30 for quick Part P brief, break for smoke and coffee then at 11.00 up to the exam room, quick run down on how the prograame works then a mock exam to get us used to the system then onto the Part P exam, 13 out if 14 passed.

Rest of the week was split between classroom and workshop were we installed a cu a cooker supply with socket/swich and a ring main with a fused spur. Then did all the bonding, ded and live tests filling out a installation cert as we went.

In the class room we had 6 AMAs along the way and some of them were tuff, 1 lad failed 2 and then struggled with the re-sits and on Thursday morning they suggested he go home and re-study and do the full week again at a later date.

Friday was spend getting us ready for are next training module week which includes the 17th Edition exam, so we were all given the BIG RED BOOK, boy what a cracking read?????????????

Then in the afternoon they explaind the ADIABATIC EQUATION ? you could see peoples brians running out of there ears? then said " but you don't need to know it because is at the back of the OSG " finally left at 5.00 totally knackared.

Now have to study and complete 13 on-line AMAs before i can book my next training week, think it will take 2 to 3 months because there is a lot to learn.

Regards

Graham

Re: Access2trade careers

Just completed the 2nd week myself at the beginning of August, It really does need to be said that the guys who do the training down there are absolutley spot on!

My week was exactly as you said Graham, may also be worth mentioning if any one is going to week 2 to make sure you know your building regs other than those in Part P. The online exam is set into 3 sections:

1) Demonstrate an understanding of what are building regulations and approved documents (4 Q's)
2) Demonstrate an understanding of Approved Document P (7 Q's)
3) Demonstrate an understanding of other applicable building regulations and approved documents (9 Q's)

I'll rack my brains to think of some example questions that I had to give an idea.

Re: Access2trade careers

Hi there. I'm also thinking about doing this course. I was hoping to find more info about it than what is posted here. has anybody actually completed the course?

They say their careers department can help find you work and the guy I've been speaking to says they generally don't have people leaving the course without having a job to go into(not exactly a promise, but he sounded very positive about it). I can get a loan to do the course, which isn't such a bad thing if they get me work half the way through, like they say they will.

Colin, have they helped find you employment yet? Is there anyone else on the course who can tell me anything about the employment side of things here?

Graham, are any of the people doing the course with you having the same problems as Colin here as regards employment?

Re: Access2trade careers

hi guys the teachers and great but the rest are not very good. have only started to send emails about jobs that they find on the net from places like gumtree and total jobs. found own job in end after long time searching, be ready not to work untill after week 3 and not 2 like they say.

Re: Access2trade careers

Looking through the qualifications that you get but cant see the C&G 2330 anywhere. Surely this is the most important qualification to get as it teaches you background knowledge and aint it the one that apprentiships would study??

Re: Access2trade careers

Hi all

Thanks Sean for re-lighting this thread.

I am finding the course fantastic and really enjoying it, but i am finding the 3rd lot of course work a bit harder, which is only what you would expect as is for the 17th Edition exam.

The company is still fairly new so things are improving all the time, i started getting e-mails from them after i finished week 2 training with help for wtiting CV and business start up help and jobs they have found in my area. I dont expect a mirale from them to find me a job but its nice to know they are trying.

Hi Colin, i pressume you have done your third week? how did it go, good i hope. PM me if you could with any tips???

Hi M4tty, not sure what 2330 is, but if i want to join governing body like ELECSA i need the 2382 level 10 17th edition, unless i am mistaken.

Cheers Graham

Re: Access2trade careers

Hmmm, now I'm rethinking.... The course Mac has highlighted is looking more tempting to me.

A lot more crammed into a smaller space of time though. The thing i liked about the access2 course was the space of time to get your head around it, but it does seem very expensive in comparison to the TEC20 and even the TEC30(both of which contain more modules).

I guess it all depends on what time you have spare.

Re: Access2trade careers

By the nature of these types of courses you wouldn't be able to individually compare them like for like. I mean, you aint gonna do one and then the other and see which was best. So all you can do is get the feedback from the people who are doing the courses.
I'm currently doing the Access2Trade course and from my experience I have only positive experiences from what I have been doing. The guys who do the practical and theory on the weeks with them have been very helpfull and also in touch with the real world. The learning methods between modules consist of self researching theory and online testing. This again fits in well with you lifestyle as I can either do as much or as little as I like depending on how I feel / how busy I am etc..
Yes the cost is high, but I do not feel as though any quality is being compromised.

Well there's my two pennys worth. All the best!

Hi guys,

I am on the Access2Tradecareers course and I have just finished AMA1.6 and awaiting placement on my first practical course, I must admit for someone who hasn't had is head in a book for over 10 years the process of which they set you learning objectives in my eyes are excellent.
Yes this course is costly but there is no time frame for your coursework, its at your own pace which eleviates so much pressure for you. And cost wise, at a little over £100 a month for the next 4-5 years, you dont really notice it.
Its the same kind of expense as your Mrs getting a new motor on tap. Except you will be on triple what your wages are by the time you have paid it off, well for a ForkLift truck Driver like me anyways. :D

Got any tips for the first practical session?

Wallicio
Padwan Learner

Wallicio, I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Currently picking up AMA 3's after having a break for a couple of months due to being busy wih a new job. I'm looking forward to getting back for week 3 sometime soon.

All the best, Paul

I've been speaking to Access 2 Trade, not overly impressed with the people I spoke to over the phone, I've been quoted £5995 which I have been told is non negotiable. Anyone any tips on how to go about getting the £5495 price that I've seen a quoted on here. £5.5k was push but £6k seems extortionate. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi Wallicio, i see you are waiting your first practical i have just started and have done AMA1.2 so far, i am wondering how long you have to wait to get booked onto a practical week and when is the next one. The impression i got was you dont have to wait very long is this correct.

Hi Pete3,

The next day they got back to me with a full list of course dates with vacancies, soonest course is a fortnight If by the time i replied they still had a vacancy on it, got to ok it with the boss first and hopefully get away last week of November. :)

How are you getting on with your AMA's?

Wallicio
Padwan Learner

Walicio,

I've done the first six AMA's and am going on the first practical at the end of November ( 30th - 4th) the week before was fully booked.

Pete3

Hi Guys,
I've got a rep from Access2 trade coming to see me on Weds 18th Nov. Still very wary of signing up for the course but I found your comments reassuring!

Just wondering how Guitar Graham, Pete3 and Wallicio are getting on, should I go for it?

Thats a shame Pete3, I got 7-11 Dec as work has and will be mad and its the only week i can get, looks like you will have to update me on the 5th before i head off on the 6th. exciting times eh!

You banged out your AMA's quickly didnt you? took me a while to do the last 3. Glad i have had to wait a little while though, am goiing over them a lot so everything is crystal before the first practical week, dont wanna turn up and fluff it.

Careful, relax, the course so far for me is good. yes there are others out there at a fraction of the price but to be fair you do get what you pay for with access2trade, learning is at your own pace and they are only a call/e-mail away if you dont quite get something. for me I dont think i could do a 20 day course, for 1 i couldnt afford to lose 20days+pay and i cant see my employer letting me have that amount of time off and 2 i dont think i could learn that quickly. Its each to their own and it is your decision mate.

Its the end result that matters anyway doesnt it, not the route in but the qualifications and experience. Something where you can earn decent money by applying a bit of brain, rather that carting boxes around on a forklift, well thats why i want to get into it anyways. :)

Good luck Pete3!

Wallicio
Padwan Learner

Thats a shame you got the week after me.
Yes i did manage the AMA's quite quickly, i was doing it full time though, about 8 hours a day. I am going ot use the next two weeks to go over everything a few more times as it was all beginning to bounce off a bit at the end.
I could have got on a practical next week, and the week after was fully booked, so they do appear to run the practicals every week.

As to the cost, yes it is a lot of money but compared to the IT industry where i came from, a weeks training would cost anything from 1000 to 1800 GBP not including VAT i think this course is quite good value.

Good luck on your week.

Pete

Thanks for the reply Wallicio, I agree with your thoughts on the 20 day course, there's no way you could be up to scratch in such a short time. I think I may well bite the bullet and go for it!
Good luck for 7th to 11th Dec!!!!

I'm in the process of signing up with Access2Trade largely due to this post and the helpful people who have submitted info on it.
On another post a member has posted this with regards to the qualifications we will gain on the course:
"Maybe if you want to become a professional electrician you should be looking at the C&G 2330 and the 2356, coupled with the part p and the 2382. This will train you in domestic, commercial and industrial environments. The courses you mentioned only have domestic elements and you will not be a qualified "electrician"."
Is this the case as I haven't signed the cheque yet!!
Any help would be much appreciated!

Hmm

A familiar quote. The information is 100% correct but don't just take my word for it. Here is some helpful information from independant bodies:-

City and Guilds
02072942468

JIB
02083020031

Mention you want to be a qualified 'electrician' and ask them what qualifications you would need.

Try this link:-

Electrician Job Profile

A common misconception is training providers offering a domestic installers course with part p, 17th edition, 2392 (initial verification) and 2391 (inspection testing) and calling it a 'Professional Electrician' course. However a glorified 'Domestic Installer' is what they should call it as you are restricted to only working in domestic environments. A qualified 'Electrician' is multiskilled and is elligible to work in commercial, industrial and commercial environments. They are recognised in the trade as being skilled and can further their training such as working in power stations and factories.

Choose your course wisely and don't always take answers as face value. It's important to do your background research.

Good luck

Hi i started this course back in Feb 2009 and next week i go away to do my 3rd week, the 17th Edtion and the G & G 2392-10 Level 2. on passing these i can then apply to join 1 of the governing bodies and work as Domestic Electrician.
This is what i started this course to do and a couple of lads i met in March on week 1 are now doing that.
I signed up for the full course and people i have spoken with say that if i get the C & G 2391-10 level 3 and the C & G 2377-12 Level 3 then the worlds my oyster?

So far i feel money well spent and i will give my update to this when i retun, hopefully with good news ??????????

Hi Graham, and as I said earlier, thanks for starting this post as it has proved really useful so far. Besim has made me rethink my options a little though. I do intend to work in the domestic market but I also have customers in offices, warehouses schools etc who definitely want me to do their electrical work when I'm qualified(I currently work as a data installer). I'm still a little confused as to whether Access 2 Trade will give me the qualifications necessary to be able to do this??? Guess I better keep on with the research!

Hi has far has i understand there are no regulations for commercial work other than you are a competant person unlike domistic where you have to be Part P? somebody may correct me.

But of all the courses out there i have not come across any bad feedback back about Access2Trade?

You do what feel best for you and good luck

Graham

You cannot work in a commercial environment unsupervised without the 2330 L2+ L3 and 2356 (NVQ3) or previous qualifications i.e the 236 or 2360 P1 and P2.

There may not be bad feedback about access 2 trade yet as they are quite new to the industry, however after looking on their website they advertise a 'professional electrician' without offering the 2330 the electrician course, with only domestic training. Isn't this a form of mis-selling?

You be the judge...

Hi Besim

Your post got me thinking so i asked access2trade and this is the reply.

"The good news is that the training you are doing will let you work as a commerical and industrial electrician. You do not need the 2330 in order to be classed as a qualified or professional electrician

The 2391 is regarded as the most complicated exams, even by highly trained sparkies, and this is what you'll take at the end of your training (no pressure!)

The 2330 is what people normally train towards if they follow the apprentice route. It takes a long time, up to four years, because most people are released on day leave to study."

And as i said i my last post the 2391 is the important 1. Two sparks i spoke to before i enrolled, 1 is a electrical company director the other a team manager both mentioned the 2391 and said thats the 1 which a lot of people shy away from.

But i feel happy with what i am doing and so do the people i have meet on the course.

Graham.

I'm sorry to say that if that is what they have told you, it is a total lie. There is no qualification that they offer which will allow you to work 'LEGALLY' on a commercial or industrial premises unsupervised. With regards to being a qualified electrician the 2391 is not important at all. The 2391 allows one to do periodic testing and signing off electrical installations others have made. It doesn't allow you to do an office block rewire. It is a good money earner and should be done by a qualified experienced electrician.

A 2391 should not be even attempted by someone with only a basic understanding of domestic installations. One of the main units of the 2330 level 3 course is inspection testing and commissioning. A crucial unit one needs to learn on theory and practice before even attempting the 2391 exam. And even then then exam is still tough but at least one has a chance.

The 2330 is not only available on the apprentice route, can be done privately also.

The end result should be working towards the NVQ3 2356, what you need to be recognised as an approved electrician. This also happens to be a listed qualification if one wanted to immigrate somewhere for example. It is the current industry standard. No other qualifications hold this weight I'm afraid.

Hi Basim

What if i dont want to rewire a office block? what if i just want to be a house basher, i dont see what the problem is that you have with the course i am doing?

I dont want do appear to be rude and really enjoy being part of this forum, but i am doing this to improve my life and have loads of good feedback from A) people doing the course and B) poeple who have replied to questions i have posted

At the end of the day we all have 1 thing in common, ELECTRICITY, Sung by OMD Cracking song.

Hi Graham, i'm not sure Basim is saying he has a problem with the course you are doing, he is simply saying that it won't legally allow you to work in a commercial premises.
The problem is Access are saying it will, someone has got it wrong I just haven't found any other info to justify either yet.
But what I don't understand is if you just want to be a house basher why do the 2391 qualification which allows you to test commercial premises? I will be rewiring office blocks (hopefully!), and I can't afford to invest £6k in something that offers a "professional electrician course" but won't allow me to operate as one.

Fingers crossed it will all become clear soon.......:)
