I'm sure I'm not the first to hear of this but for those who haven't:

I was contacted by a man selling advertisement space in a magazine claiming to be affiliated with the Emergency services, the spiel was that they would advertise you exclusively as a trade ie the only Electrician listed, in this publication which was distributed to various places and would promote you as part of the Safe Trader scheme
it sounds pretty good but I was suspicious from the outset as the call was from a mobile number.

He said there was no financial commitment until they had shown me the completed Advert ,so I asked for previous editions and other info to be emailed to me first
he agreed and asked would I agree to take the provisional place as it was a first come first serve thing, and could he get the publisher to give me a 20 second call to pencil me in for the place and confirm details.
I said I'd check the company out first before anything else (as it sounded fishy) and ended the call, 5 mins later this girl from Sigma publishing called on a landline (it was a call centre) and told me the call was to be recorded for training purposes etc
She went through my details ie address which they must have got from the NICEIC website, and tried to get me to agree to the ad unseen with the option of amending it only , I told her there was no chance I'd agree to anything over the phone and especially when details like the invoice dates were different to what he'd told me 5 mins earlier ,I said it sounded like a scam and wanted no part of it.

I googled it when I got home and there are numerous people and a Police authority stating that its a scam and not to get drawn in .

Anyway I text the blokes mobile thanking him for trying his con on me and offered to meet up if he's ever in the area!

Can the moderators let me know if I can post the blokes name and numbers I was called so that others may avoid this waste of time?.

yep, it's a scam. name and shame. had it tried on me last year. a magazine that nobody's heard of, no distribution. they con you by saying it's to help charities, but at the end of the day, your money goes to faceless scam operators.

Years ago it was the fire brigade benevolent fund diary. The dopey sucker I was working with at the time fell for it hook line and sinker, think he frittered away about £400 of company money on that.
I don't know what was going though his mind - even if it weren't a scam there doesn't seem much point advertising in a national, niche market diary, not for a local wine bar anyway. Imagine the amount of retired firemen we would have had to have got drunk to recoup the cost of the advert. Idiot.

I had one today community focus magazine. Love hands free in the van chatted away my whole journey then when I got to the next job said I wernt interested. Nice to have a chat with people sometimes when you work alone lol

Soon as I put my details on Yell I had 2 or 3 of these.

Still waiting for emails of the details. I thought it was Yell just passing my details out (which they most likely do). I was offered space for £150 payable 1 month after publication.

I didn't take up the offer.

Had these a few times many many years ago claiming to be supporting the local police and police federation told them I was on another call on one occasion and could he ring me back in about 10 minutes rang the local police and got put through to an officer who handled the police federation stuff and he said he had never heard of them and could I give them his number when they rang back as he would like to investigate their scam gave the guy who rang back and never heard any more

If you want to check up on a book, magazine or periodical ask for their 10 or 13 figure ISBN number. It will be in the format WW group classification, XXXX publisher, YYY title Z check number. Mine’s 13 figure as it includes the issue number.
I’ve got one as I’m registered as a publisher even though I’ve not used it for years. You publish commercially in the UK you have to be registered.
