Shame you don't have a selv Ov ground reference you could then bring in an external signal voltage of a 12v battery to proof the ballast through a Pot'.

thanks for all replies. mr. resistor looks good. it says 1-10V on the switch. rest is in german. marvo, i tried the 1KW dimmer to see. when it was apparent that it was no good, i replaced with a bog standard rocker 10A plate switch,

I can only assume its a PnP set-up hence my comment if you had a 0V terminal on transistor side (selv) you could in thoery strapit to the Negative of a battery and run your positive from the battery through a resistor and mimic the same effect the ballast does with its own control supply.

Are the lamps still ok you may have dimming issues if lamps on way out ...?

marvo, i think so. topquark's post led me to mr. resistor and a phone call this morning ordered the part. apparently the dimmer acts in 2 ways. a basic on/off and also a variable voltage ( 0 - 10V ) sent to the ballast to dim. also used with LED drivers. thanks a gain to all who posted, (esp. topquark)

quick update. ordered dimmer from mr. resistor, as advised by topquark. came yesterday and went and fitted this morning. result. florries dimming nice and even. part was about £25 with handling and postage.
