Hi folks,

Great to be here - plenty banter and info kicking about.

My business partner, a qualified electrician and I are wondering if you need to be at least approved to test and sign the test certificates on a small residential extension?

Any info would be appreciated as no matter what we want to do the right thing but also what is needed not preferred!

Cheers.
Ryan

For the electrical installation certificates to comply with the wiring regulations, you need to be competent to do the installation work, the testing and correctly complete the paperwork.

Qualifications and accreditation are often useful and the training courses do help to provide the needed competence and you have to be able to defend your competence in a court of law if it should come to that.

If it involves signing off as part of a warrant or planning the easiest option is being a scam member. Either NICEIC or SELECT. Can't speak for SELECT but with NICEIC you have to be an Aproved Contractor status and jump through their hoops. Otherwise you have to sit and pass the Scottish Building Regs exam to get on their register (and have your Lee tribal quails). Other option is if you have a JIB card some councils will accept that as proof of competence. Depending where you are located some councils are hot about all this and some aren't.

So in a sense you do have to be approved - AC unless you want the hassle of other routes.
