We have a family friend who has a son with Autism who keeps breaking the TVs with the rmeote control. His mum has asked us if we can help, having broekn 3 TVs!

I have found a protective TV cover, but I need to add a control to it, so he can switch it on/off, channel up/down and volume up/down. This would eliminate the remote control.

Just wondered if this is possible and if so, how? If someone could help that would be fabulous.

Probably the simplest solution is not to modify the TV, but to create a housing for an additional remote control with the necessary button functions brought out onto its surface. It would be a simple matter to remove a remote PCB from its case and solder some leads to the relevant button contacts. High durability buttons could then be fitted (like small versions of the ones used in lifts and arcade games) that will withstand aggressive handling.

Even if the controls are to be fixed in place on the TV cover, it's probably still easiest and safest to use a modified remote with its infra-red LED pointed towards the TV's receiver.

If it is a case of using the remote to hit the tv and break it, can it be put in an enclosure and bolted to a wall or table?
alternatively can the tv be wall mounted with a polycarbonate screen mounted in front of it.,
if you go for something about 10mm thick it would survive a lump hammer attack.

I am not clear as to whether the tv is destroyed by physical attack with the remote or fiddling with the buttons in such a way as it causes destruction to the tv function? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Physically breaking it I think - in the OP it mentions him fitting a protective cover to the TV.
