hi all,

started my 2330 level2 in sept and am enjoying it,could someone clarify what i think is correct to gaining your jib card.
1.do your ecs safety test, get card as mate/improver.
2.study 2330 level2&3.
3.study 2382 17th edition.
4. study 2391 test and inspection.

whilst you are doing all this you need to do your nvq level 3,by way of obtaining a portfolio of your work, and then finally you do your am2 test. is this the correct procedure to get your jib card as an approved spark?

comments please.

mate i wish i could reply to your because i am looking for the same answer, but i have completed level3 2330 and have started my nvq

Got my jib card 25yrs ago, from the company i worked for, graded as a technician, had my 15th, 16th regs put on at later dates inc c.s.c.s. health and safety, doing my 17th in jan, have been self employed for 15 yrs now, in all my working life i have never ever been asked if i was jib graded, so whats the point of it ??? its done nowt for me. dave

if you work for a reputable contractor they will assign a recommended grade which will be considered by the JIB when applying. if you are employed then your employer should also pay for it

If you have no certificates you will get jib card as electrical labourer. I think when you pass level 2 you become mate, level 3 no NVQ is improver. If you are doing apprenticeship then you will do NVQ & also AM2. If you are an adult learner then you will only do NVQ. After this you will attain electrican grade then after 2 years approved electrician.

i dont think that's entirely true

you wont do NVQ 3 & AM2 as an apprentice

and i don't think you achieve approved electrician grading after 2 years, i was under the impression that you need your 2391 to be an approved electrician.

i might be wrong, but i think you're mistaken.

anyone care to clarify?

The way i did it was i did the 2330 level 2 and 3, then 16th,17th, 2391 inspection test, Pat testing, went through a nvq the person i worked for did not have to pay for nvq due improving staff skills i signed a few paper work took afew pictures undertook a job that covered all aspects of nvq got proof pictures and intruction, diagrams had a few site visits they took all my paper work in less than 12 weeks got nvq in post!!!! grading as approved electrician also got fire alarm emergency lights and 1851 alarms and a few other related courses they did not put on the card?
to tell you the truth its all about the funding people making big money the even did all my paper work for my nvq?
If any sparky need advice more than happy to help shaker!!

i went through the training center when i left school after doing my gcse's. now by the sounds of things it can work alot different in england as i have read in these forums. but. i did my AM2, NVQ3, keyskills as well as other ways of assessment such as a yearly portfolio and quarterly site visits to watch me work for half an hour. all training centers in NI run the JIB course, so when we were training we automatically got our apprentice jib cards and once we gained our practical and written exams we could apply for our JIB graded cards. in my first year i was in college 2days per week and 3 days on site with a firm who sponsered you and 2nd year was 1 day at college then 4 days on site etc etc. all in all four years training

Uksel, you are partly correct. I did do both NVQ3 and AM2 on my apprenticeship, even though they are both tests of your practical ability so its a bit stupid. There was actually a bloke in my class in college who didnt do it because he enrolled a couple of days before me and some loophole meant he didnt have to do it!! You used to get approved by having another 2 years experience as a spark, i suppose to prove your worth with a bit more responsibility but now you do need your 2391.

Hello Shaker,

Well I'm looking to get graded as a spark when I eventually get round to doing the ECS test!

Qualifications I have are as follows -

2360 part 1
2330 level 3
16th edition

I'm doing the 17th edition upgrade course this month and in May I'm doing 2391.Touchwood (taps head) ,I should pass!

Now apparently I need my NVQ3 to get graded by the JIB as an electrician,I've seen various courses available, anything from £600 upwards,a bit pricey me thinks. How deep do they think our pockets are?

I've about 10 years experience,a little domestic, lots of commercial and some industrial too.

How do you think the best way forward is for me to electrician status with the JIB? I suppose another thing to point out is that i did not serve a recognised apprenticeship as I went to college of my own back to get these qualifications when i was a little older!

Almost forgot, hello all it's my first post!

You need to do the City & Guilds 2330 level 2 and 3 plus
Electrotechnical NVQ level 3 which is the City & Guilds 2356 which includes doing the AM2 test
Plus a recognised apprenticeship
When the above has been completed you can on payment of £30 contact the JIB and send copies of your certificates as proof of achiement claim your JIB card and CS CS card

just come off the phoneto them.i am jib graded for 30years and to gain latest card you need to sit a 40 question test on electrical safety at a local centre then you must have the 2391,hope this helps

If you complete the Electrotechnical NVQ3 and apply for a JIB card ASAP then the NVQ will entitle you to a CSCS (electrical safety) card for 3 years.

The cost of sitting the CSCS test is £35.00 though the ECA

I have just been quoted £1449 to do my NVQ3.

I kid you not!
This does not sound to far off. I would do it for for about £1,100. This would include 12 off monthly visits to your work place for 2 hours per visit plus petrol expenses. It would include registration and certification with the awarding body but not the cost of the AM2 test. I do this NVQ3 in my job as I am an NVQ Assessor and Electrician by trade.

If you were an apprentice you would get the lot for free!

Thanks for the reply Pgee.

I've been trawling the net to try and find various training companies that offer NVQ3.Prices start from £600 upwards.Obviously college prices are a bit cheaper but I can't seem to find one in my local area that does it and I doubt wether a college tutor in Cornwall is going to be too keen on travelling upto Durham on occasions! It looks like I may have to postpone this course as at the moment I just haven't got that kind of money.

I wish I was an apprentice like but unfortunately I missed that particular boat,so everything I've done has been self-funded.I'd just like to gain the JIB card because as I'm not working at the moment, nearly all the agencies I'm in touch with are asking for JIB graded electricians.

Apparently I do not need to do the AM2 for my grading.(the JIB's own words).

I shall persevere.:(

hi there
i am a mature student (38) and i am in my last year at college got my final 2330 exam in june , i have also nearly completed my nvq3 i have been working in the trade for about 3 years now .
i was told that i would not have to do a am2 test as these were for young apprentices , however the college im training at had a visit from the E V who told them that we had to do the am2 otherwise the nvq3 would not stand .
is this true as i have read other on the jib website .
any thoughts greatly appeciated
thanks .

Hi there shaker, interested in getting my nvq3, am 33 and been in the industry for about 8 years, have got my part 1 and 2 and 2391. never bothered about jib as never needed it, obviously the way the industry is at mo think it will be beneficial to have. does you know of a good place to get. many thanks..

Hi

Just send off your NVQ Level Three to the JIB with a letter from an approved spark which gives you a reference that he feels you are good enough to be a electrician.

100% you will get your ticket.

Thanks

Mark

I can deliver it for you as I am a qualified NVQ Assessor on the Electrotechnical NVQ3 what area do you live in?

i m based in ilford, essex. what would the total cost be for nvq 3.
Hi jimmy j. the cost depends on you in the main and how fast you can do it. The fastest I've seen it done is 8 months. I normally say 12 months is about normal. The cost based on 12 months includes twelve 2 hour visits by an NVQ Assessor, registration and certification with EAL or C&G but not an AM2 test is about £1,100. If you have a training provider who charges by the visit the cost of a visit will be about £90 so the quicker you do it the cheaper.

He did the AM2 but that was separate. It was all funded as he is under 25. He did the NVQ in 3/4 months then did the AM2 a couple of weeks after his NVQ had been signed off. He has had his AM2 certificate but is still waiting for his NVQ cert, and that was about 7 weeks ago!

Heres the deal.
C&G papers up to level 3, ECS and NVQ3. Apply for card and you should be graded as an electrician. AM1 & 2 are for young lads doing a JIB apprenticeship only. It does not apply to adult trainees. To be an approved electrician you will need a C&G 2391 testing and inspection ticket. It used to be the case that you needed to have spent a certain amount of time in the industry before you could be considered approved. (I know guys who did a 7 year apprenticeship in the late 60's early 70's who could not be considered as approved untill they were 23) however, i'm not too sure of that now.
Wilber.

wilbur is correct am1&2 are for apprentices that have done a scheme like jtl.if you book for an am2 they will take your money!!
you want to do level 3 nvq,its not level 3 2330 either.best way is to do it online with QUICK•STEP® LAMINATE FLOORING
as 4 jib unless your boss is holding back your pay, you'll haft to leave b4 they up it 9 times out of 10.
im never paying another fee to jib again, after finding out theyb are looking to set up centres in poland to get them reg'd & carded up.ive had job offers 4 jib sparks under the jib rate, which takes the pee!!!!!!

www.jib.org will give you all the grading definitions you require and the application forms to download. If you are trying to get approved status, you must have the 2391. If you have the passport to safety(CCNSG) that should also mean you do not have the ECS and you will be granted that and the CSCS automatically. As far as I'm concerned and I work totally in Industrial(Oil & Gas, Steelworks, Power generation, Water treatment and Pharmaceutical), you will not be considered without a current JIB card on most jobs. Hope this helps, regards, Dan.

ST spark,
I find that incredibly strange, did your company apply or did you and did you/ they apply for the grade or let JIB decide?

I applied for it myself hopeing to get electrician grade or at least improver, as a sole trader i thought it might help getting work with bigger firms. Jib said that because i have no nvq i cant get the spark card and i cant get improver or trainee as im not currently doing an nvq. So from what they saying u have to do the nvq, but i no sparks with electrician card that dont have the nvq..! bit of a joke int it!

Out of interest any1 no how much is the nvq 3 course??

I am in exactly the same boat, I got these quals from the army

City and Guilds 2390 parts 1 & 2
City and Guilds 2360 C Course
City and Guilds 2381 16th Edition, wiring regs
City and Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing

And I applied for JIB card, as nearly every one wants CSCS now. I got it back last week and it says Senior graded electical trainee. No use to me is it!!! It has my CSCS proof on it so every job on site i go to now i'm a 29 year old apprentice? What is the point in doin havin those qualifications then???? NVQ3 is a swear word in my dictionary. I cant afford the costs to do it and i kinda think I shouldnt have to with what i've got!!!

just get a bog standard cscs if, they ask if your jib just say yes,ive never been asked for my serial no.
you can say you have not renewed your card if need be & provide your cert's.

Alright mate. Have the same problems as most of what is posted. Have the 2330 pt 2 + 3, the 17th and am doing the 2391. Need the nvq aswell. Just wondering would you be able to help me. I am based in east london. Cheers.

hi mate were in uk are you? im training to be an assessor for nvq i may be able to help you get nvq if you still want it?

I'm currently living in York. I'm totally stumped as to where to go go next. I thought i was qualified. 2360 1&2, C course, 2381, 2391. but from what i see, all the learn direct courses etc, that say become qualified offer less than this but jib still regard me as a trainee? how am i suppose to leave this country as a trainee. I'm going to a careers adviser next week at selby college. all i assume is that to gain nvq3 i'd have to get a job with a jib registered company as an apprentice. I'm 29 years old, no company is going to take me on as an apprentic. its all about the school leavers these days. I would love to hear from an nvq assessor to hear what my options are.

Have you been on site yet or have you just done all the courses at college?

Have you been on site yet or have you just done all the courses at college?

Yes, I've been on many sites since finishing in 2005, I'm only tryin to pursue this now as the JIB have graded me as a 'senior graded electrical trainee' having done 2369 parts 1 and 2, 2369 Electrical Installation Work Course C, 2381 16th Edition (upgarde pending) and 2391 I&T. Problem I think I'm going to have is building a portfolio, There are hardly any Jobs at the moment, and unfortunately, I never went round taking photos of work I've been doing since, plus, as a 'trainee', how the hell am I supposed to get on site? The JIB card has my CSCS proof on it. I'm screwed!! I need help BIG sticks.

There is a lot off sparks out of work so they have a choice who to take on. Who would you take on a time served spark at 29 or adult trainee at 29? Even if you get a JIB card it will still say adult trained on the back and that will put a lot of firms off.

I understand that, but I'm no less competant, i've all the theory and more an i've been on site for a few years now, its not like i finished my courses last week, I finished them in 2005, I Joined the army and got my qualifications at a military college, instead of an apprenticeship, that doesnt mean I should be less recognised. if it wasnt for the nvq3 i'd have everything I need to be a technician

When I'm running jobs i still check time served lads work if there under 25 as it been said on here many times experience counts. I've been in this game 21 years and I'm still learning 99% of adult trained sparks i have met think they know everything where as time served lads just say I've not done that before just run through it. It could be that I've met all the ***** but I think other time served lads on here will back me up.

I was only after some help. I've taught older guys stuff and learnt of younger. Its not a competition.

I know its not a competition but by putting things like i need my nvq3 and i'll be a technician when you have not even got a spark card your in dream world. If you get a spark card tomorrow your still at least 4 years away from a technician card. If its any help buy some cornflakes because some of the **** I've seen lately that have just got there card we all thought they were free inside kellogs cornflakes.
