where the other measures of 7671 522.6.5 are not used and a cable passes through a joist less than 50mm from the top, the cable must have adequate mechanical protection against nails, etc. Please tell me, does this requirement only apply to the parts of the cable passing through the joist? or does the entire length require mechanical protection? so can the part of the cable that protrudes out be left unprotected? The most likely place a nail would be inserted is in line with the joist to fix the floor boa

If the cable requires protection along it's entire length anywhere within 50mm from the top, why does the regulation specifically mention joists? they could have just said more generally, anywhere a cable is within 50mm of a floor or ceiling it must be protected. also the safe plates used to protect cables in notches only cover the joist itself, so the protruding part of the cable could still be damaged by a nail if someone decided to put nails randomly away from the joist.
