Hi Everyone.

One of my work guys has asked if its ok to put pneumatics in an electrical enclosure. I don't think it is, cause just in case of a fire, and I think I have read it somewhere in one of the regs books that you can't.
I have done a search for Pneumatics on this forum and looked in 7671 & 60204, but can't find anything. Maybe Ive just missed the reg.
I'm sure you fine people will tell me if I'm talking out of my rear or not.
Its not for work, just a general question.

How do you think pneumatic control panels are supplied?....or how do electric compressors work?

I have seen pneumatic panels in seperate enclosures. As for Compressors, the controls I have seen have their own enclosure.
I'm not saying that I'm right and that its not allowed. Im asking the question.

We segregate the pneumatics with a plastic shield if it's a small amount. If there is enough of it, we use another bay.

When I say pneumatics I mean solenoids, regs, signal convertors etc. They all go down to a rail of terminals in that sectioned off area or bay/enclosure.

We segregate out pneumatics as well LeeH. Just wondering if there is a reg saying you have to. Still cant find anything. Found one about Hydraulics but not Pneumatics.

Pneumatics and their control devices should be mounted in separate compartments this falls under the BS60204 (11.2.2), failure or leaks from any pneumatic equipment does not want to corrupt or damage the operation of any devices and controls in the electrical cabins.... extreme high pressures and large amounts of condensing water can follow a parts failure hence a need for separate containment. Also maintenance is easier if a pneumatics Engineer does not need to enter the main control panel where he may expose himself to equipment and voltages he is not competent to be around.

@Jamzie - I don't think you got what the OP was asking and yes what you say is correct but in the context of this thread your answer is misleading and wrong, the OP is asking about segragation of the Electrical control compartments and Pneumatic systems and their control equipment (not the intergrated electrics on pneumatic equipment), slightly worrying from a member who is an Engineer not to realise what the OP was asking.

@LeeH - I would question if your approach complies if just sectioned off and not a separate enclosure that could contain a high pressure failure and possible condensing air as well as damaging pressures, if by sectioned you mean air tight from each other then yes I'd agree but that would constitute a separate enclosure in my mind anyway.

Many thanks darkwood, its greatly appreciated. As I have said, I knew I had seen something before but just couldnt find it.
