Hey guys I want to be an electrician but am currently only allowed to pull a main fuse and fit meters and ancillary devices/switchgear. I am looking to the future to a day when I can legally remove the cover of a CU.

It's no' illegal tae pull the cover aff a CU... ye can dae that ony time ye like, big man!
Just dinnae try chargin' for yer time..ye'll get scunnered an' slated fer daein that, an' no get paid...
Gonnae moonlight as a seal fairy? Mair cash in that, by the way!

Hey guys I am from Scotland. Never knew I was allowed to open the consumer unit!

Just as well, because I’ve added a spur to the 30 amp ring MCB in my rental home.

This isn’t a C2 or a C3 on an EICR is it?? I don’t want the homeowners insurance to be affected!

I’ve just added a radial directly to the ring MCB which feeds a 2 gang outlet less than half a meter away from the CU (on the same back board below the CU).

My t+e is new colouring but the rest of the installation is all red and black but I’ve made it extremely obvious and neat inside the CU, checked for tightness and sleeved the cpc both in the CU and in the outlet, and earthed the outlet screws as well.

Is it up to scratch?? I want to make sure before I get a qualified spark to sign it off

You should have asked permission from the home owner before undertaking these works.
Yeah she’s ok with it, I might have left out that it would be me doing it though as to why I’ll need a spark to sign it off. The entire backboard was hanging off the wall, there was exposed live conductors at the meter and cut out and there was no isolator so I’ve repaired it all for her free of charge

Sounds more of a job for the dno rather than yourself.

No offence to the DNOs but in my area their work is slap dash at best and it’s a ---- up as to whether you get an experienced technician or a noobie. May as well do an experienced proper safe job than leave it to the cowboys however I respect what you are saying. I am not following legislation but I am doing a better and safer job than they would. I guess I’m not going to get any help on this here. Thanks anyway

You have got to realise that even us fully qualified electricians will not admit to working on meters or service heads etc.
Without permission from the Dno or meter operator it would be a legal nightmare.

I see ok. The plan is to get the MOP to install smart meters and get everything officially sealed up as I’m not allowed to do it myself even though I’m fully qualified. The MOP is allowed to repair the backboard (even relying on the MOP to get the backboard properly fixed is a game of chance) so once they’ve been out to upgrade the meter and seal everything up it will be legitimised

It's not just about qualifications but also about permission, liability, insurance etc.
You will only be allowed to do the work whilst working for a MOP or a DNO etc.

Does your employer allow you to do this kind of work outside of your employment? Would you be in trouble if they read your posts about doing it?

And all that aside nobody is going to condone doing it yourself on this forum. Any DIYer could read your post saying you did it yourself and be inspired to do the same and end up in all sorts of danger.

Spurring off a ring final in 2.5mm albeit at the cu is fine as long as the run is reasonably short.
Hope that helps.
