looks like a 2 gang 2 way to me, definitely a 2 way dimmer

Both wrong, it’s a thermo-nuclear trigger. Simple to wire up!

It used to be that getting a spark to come and do a wee job like this was either impossible or very expensive.

That's no longer the case. You'll get someone to come and do this safely, correctly and inexpensively.
