Smoke coming from electric meter/fuse box area

Hi just a question, this morning I noticed a 2 gang socket had no power to it, went to check the fuse box/electric meter in the cupboard... and there was a lot of smoke coming out from somewhere? Its not smoking any more. The 2 way gang socket is completely dead. All other outlets seem fine and not affected.

What would be the problem? Is this an expensive job, still waiting to here back from an electrician.

Right I'm going to give you some good advice here when he comes back later lock your door turn your lights off ( if any work ) and get someone in to do you an eicr! Properly!

Rewiring may be required if cables are damaged - which as @telectrix says - testing and inspection should show. You know of one fault and that may need some cable to fix, but that doesn't mean it's all unserviceable. Have you checked these guys are registered to do electrical work on domestic properties?

If he paid £550 for the new CU. i would love to see the price for a full rewire. if its a nice amount im happy to quote for the job. I could do with a nice holiday in the Med

So what do you guys think we should have been charged for the work carried out? Replacing the CU and fixing and breaking another 2 gang socket??

We now have use of the microwave but the socket that doesn't work now is the one the freezer is connected to!

for the CU change including certificate and fixing minor problems no more than £400 on my shift.

edit. just seen you rlas post. put the freezer on an extension lead to a working socket.

Hes charging £4k for a full rewire in a 3 bed semi

that price is about right, but not if you don't need it.

Like Tel, I'd have been at around £400 too.
But you would have got a full installation certificate with that, every circuit tested, and the job notified to building control, as is the requirement.

Impossible to say, but something he shouldn't have! As said above, get another opinion!

Impossible to tell really without looking, he may simply have missed a cable going to a radial circuit or left an MCB off in the new box.
