This attached picture shows what some contractor at some point has qualified as tails. This cable runs from the front of house where the service head is directly to the rear of the house (some 30 meters of cable run) to supply a 6 way Consumer unit in the kitchen which feeds everything in the house barring the lighting circuit. The contractors isolator had been installed recently (no more than 5 years ago) and this cable had been terminated directly into the output of the isolator.

The tenant of the house, a beautiful young lady, with 2 lovely young children is so very lucky she decided to have a cooker circuit installed and pay for it herself because her landlord refused to do so. 20121207_133042.jpg

If the tennent pays for the new circuit and remedial work, lets hope the landlord deducts the cost from her next couple of monthly payments

Dont think I have ever seen anything that bad its horrific. The tennant should report that to environmental health or the council as the landlord should be made to answer questions on the safety of the property he/she is letting out.

That terminal earth block looks less than 4 years old.....it was probably fitted by a labourer who was wanting to get to the pub and at the same time angry with their boss on a Friday afternoon.....

So what is your plan to go forward with the installation of cooker circuit now?? Is this young lady also prepared to pay for remedials to the existing installation, or is that being thrown back to the Landlord to cover??

periodic???? the only piece of paper issued on that job should have been a danger notice, with copies sent to landlord, local council, and environmental health.

"Contractor!?" Surely no contractor would leave that? I would be more inclined to suggest the landlord had a go himself to save a couple of quid. Even so it's surprising what kind of state some people are prepared to leave an electrical installation in.

It's a wonder they managed to install that bonding without killing them self. Whoever did it must have isolated it beforehand, which must surely have set alarm bells ringing?

well....
i find this one a bit hard to believe myself adam.....

But the OP does state this had one done 6 months ago. Mandatory EICR's would render them useless IMHO

Yes but maybe if they were done yearly or at least every change of tenancy it may reduce the number of bad installations. Rented properties get used and abused and damage can just be botched and its "rentable" again.
Imho properties should have a valid landlord cert before it can be let.

As per the photo, this looks like its been in place for years so the "blame" rests on the shoulders of the person who's signature is on the EICR done 6 months ago.

Mandatory EICR's done by goons like this won't help ANYONE.

Fair point and they should come down like a ton of bricks on him, as there's no excuse in the world that could get him off.
Yeah EICR's done by goons won't solve nothing but leaving the system the way it is won't either.

a few more pics might help i hope this is in a cupboard so that it cant be touched by the tenant
at the least the bare conductors need to be made safe temporarily

These are makeshift tails ayjay. I shut the whole installation down and the young lady has moved out until it's rewired.

Maybe miles away here, but any chance it's been done by a previous tennent to bypass a electric meter? If not the incoming meter, poss one fitted by landlord?
My first thought as well.Anything GREEN growing nearby?Windows looking like they've suffered from heavy condensation?

If ever there was graphic evidence of the need for a single statutory regulatory body (like Gas Safe) with mandatory RIDDOR notification this surely has to it!

i'd have even invited the wrath of DNO and removed their fuse.

Holy ****. just managed to get the picture working. Didn't think it would be as bad as that though. I'd love to have been there just after he'd finished just to see the look on his face when I ask "are you happy with that?"

whats a cupboard got to do with owt?.....
i hope your not seriously entertaining the notion that a `cupboard`....with a door (probably on a magnetic hook) constitutes barriers and enclosures are you....
fella i did a bit of work for once came across something a bit similar to this....but because it was under the kitchen top.....he just left it.....that was bare cable bridging the meter....
for god`s sake....

I've never come across anything quite like that picture. How could anyone capable of screwing a new earth block to the wall and connecting it up possibly ignore the lethal mess just above it.
