Hi all

Need a bit of advice regarding asbestos. (please no comments regarding don't touch it)
Im doing my course next week to allow me to disturb it but need to quote for a job by Monday.

Got a chimney containing asbestos cermet. Said chimney is rendered and painted, but the paint has started to peal off and the floor is covered in said paint.

Is it likely that this paint is contaminated with asbestos and therefore requires an asbestos deep clean?

You would need to explain how the asbestos cement has been used to construct the chimney, i.e. is it on the outside covered by the flaking paint? If the Asbestos fibres are released and inhaled, it can prove fatal. Only way to tell is have the source tested. Personally, if someone told me it was asbestos, I wouldn't' touch the project until they have it removed safely & properly.

Thanks for your reply.

The report I have only states: Chimney positive sample for asbestos cermet

There is a picture of the chimney as well but no details about if it is the render or joining cermet.

I will air on the side of caution and treat as contaminated.

In regards to staying well clear of this project until all the asbestos is removed - this is not possible as the whole building would have to be knocked down and built again from scratch.

As a result I have had to undertake the Asbestos course Level 1 and now booked onto the Level 2.
Total cost of both courses in around £300 per person and there's 2 of us.

With this course we are able to drill, remove non-licences asbestos and undertake any non-licences asbestos work

Well if you've done the appropriate course, you could probably advise us. Just wonder what else is lurking in the property. Suppose they have all the appropriate risks assessed and locations etc, and in their CDM 2015 plan?
