Discuss Bending 90 in 20mm or25mm conduit in the Electricians' Talk area at ElectriciansForums.net
as written its a time consuming exercise each sparky / electrician is different from how the form the lengths me I just do two simple messures then add 2" inches (25mm) and form with a 2ft lengh of 4 by 2 with a 20mm hole or 25mm hole and form from this works pretty well for me granted im over or under by 5 / 10 mill but I would rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it :wink_smile:Please can some one help me please haven't done steel conduit for a while. What's the best way to get a 90 bend at the right length 1st time???
The main thing to do is to mark the former in the right place,no one seems to be able to do that these days,if the mark is right then your conduit will be the right length.
Everyone has different methods, and many sparks have never had to do metal conduit.
I can go for years without doing conduit and it takes a couple off bends, offsets and a bubble to get back into the swing of it.
I hate metal conduit,I served most of my time doing it.
The last time I done it I had the usual few disasters, but after marking the former in the right place away I went.
As long as you do not try anything fancy like a bend and double set in the first length it soon comes back to you.
Although it can be quite funny watching the 'young super spark know it all's' that have only done conduit at college get put on it and see them really struggle and realize it is a bit harder than plastic conduit with the manufactured bends.
Another thing that young sparks can't do is form an offset,a kick or a bend in trunking,if it is not a manufactured bend or set then they are lost, and they have never heard of fish plates.

If your a weed like me try and nick a 4ft scaff tube from somewhere and use it as extension bar on the handle, stops you from just doing press ups on the bar :joker:
i just drag that bar over me....no probs...lol..If your a weed like me try and nick a 4ft scaff tube from somewhere and use it as extension bar on the handle, stops you from just doing press ups on the bar :joker:
there was a guy at college he tried to bend a bit off tube but it kept lifting him of floor
he needed to jump up then hang onto it to move it
Hahaha happened to me so much when I first had a go on 25mm! I've been doing me push ups since and now don't struggle so much...............honest!
Well you better start the chin-ups as well if you want bend 32mm lol

You have to remember to put the conduit in the bender the right way (ie the bend would be wrong if your measurment was from the wrong direction). You measure to back of bend and put the measured end in from opposite side of bending handle. Take a set square and hold the pipe in place possibly using the handle to keep it in place put the square on the pipe with the edge on the measured mark. put the pipe with the set square to the" former" face, bend conduit and it should be" right on".
this sounded right when I typed it so hope it comes over right.
As a foot note I worked with a sparky years ago who could take a full length of conduit and bend it into the shape of a toboggon with a running thread on one end and was able to get it so right that he could couple both ends together. I had one try and failed lol.
