Bosch Impact Driver

Anyone got and experience of the Bosch GDR 14.4v impact driver? (old Ni-Cd version, not the new li-on). There are still a few on the market at a very good price for the bare unit and as the rest of my kit is 14.4v (only limited use on the odd install job as its mostly machinery maintenance) it makes sense to add an impact driver of the same type rather then spending a small fortune on a new li-on job.

My main concern if if my current 2.4A-h batteries will have enough in them to run the impact driver? I have plenty of batteries and all hold a good charge when used with the combi drill, jigsaw etc.

Any thoughts on the above? its either this one or bite the bullet and get the 10.8 li-on version which comes in at 4x the price of the Ni-Cd version (not sure i can justify the expense with how much use it will get)

Hi mate,

I run my 18v Dewalt Impact on 1.3ah batteries as i have 6 of them. Never bothered to upgrade my batteries purely because i have so many of them, but it runs just fine on 1.5's so your 2.4's shouldn't have any trouble at all.

I recommend getting hold of one though, so handy to have. Mine has been invaluable to me so far.

Cheers for passing on your advice, decided to give it a go and have just placed the order. I am hoping I end up with the same opinion as you wonder how i ever managed without one.

Chris, you'll find that for driving, impact drivers are much easier on batteries than standard drivers because they apply torque to the screw head in a different way. What you gain in long life, you lose in 'feel'. They are brilliant tools mind, and nothing drives faster in my opinion. If you've not used one before, take it easy.

Thanks for the advice, feel it was an even better purchase now. I have seen what they are capable of, my brother has a Dewalt Li-on job and that makes light work of pretty much anything. It was just the batteries a was concerned about but it looks like that won't be a problem.

If you work in an industrial setting like i do, and always have a lot of nuts and bolts to tighten (that you dont need to tighten to a specific torque) then i just can't recommend one enough. Get a set of these:

And you will make seriously light work of many jobs.
