i went to a job today which was to change a consumer unit , i removed a old crabtree rccb which the tails entered into when i unscrewed the rccb from the wall and lifted it clear of the tails i noticed that the live tail seemed to drop from the base of the meter .
on closer inspection i could see that there was only a couple of strands of copper holding into the meter , the supplier was called and after a 30 min wait on the phone agreed to send someone over .
when the guy came and took the tails out of the meter it was clear to see that whoever had fitted the meter tails had stripped the outer with their crops and scored the inner conductors ,on the neutrals it was clear to see the score marks that the crops had made .
the meter was only a couple of months old .

Excellent mate, very dangerous. If it was done a couple of months ago should the DNO have a copy of who done the job,if it was done by the DNO:confused:

Abit off topic, and abit of a stupid question, but in all my time as an electrician (Not that long to be honest haha) I havent been told why you must not score the conductor, I was obviously taught not to do it, but never why not to do it?

Any ideas?

have you ever fitted a gland to swa?

I gland SWAs near enough everyday, ive done up to 4-core at 120mm per core , I know the prupose of scoring the steel wire armour as this makes it snap off easier, making for a neatier cut.:p

Exactly score the conductor, bit of a wiggle and the strands tend to drop off ( is why not to, in answer to your question):)

i did a consumer unit change the other day and the line conductur fell out of the meter completly there was 2 slight marks on the copper where it had been connected.Probably with a very small terminal.

the guy who came out took the 2 tails with him .
i imagine they would have a record of who changed the meter recently .
i dont supose we will find out if there will be any bo*****ings given out
