Discuss Cheap tools that work in the Electrical Tools and Products area at ElectriciansForums.net

Ok one cheap tool that has worked time and again is my chalk line £5. I've even pushed the boat out and got two one with blue chalk, the other with white specially for freshly plastered unpainted ceiling so the decorator doesn't have to go over the ceiling a million times to get rid of the lines.

'Ang on a minute I use a pipe cutter on SWA it works fine for me. I guess I have a superior pipe cutter (though I doubt it, i think it cost a pound. It must just be me:cool:)

I used mine on a tiny bit of 1.5 three core swa the outer sheath kept getting ruffled up and prevented the pipe cutter turning. I suppose I'm just not that

Do you use chalk lines to line up D/Ls etc then? Is that the thing where theres a bit of string with chalk on it and you twang it to the surface to create a line?

I use a laser but it is well annoying the battery keeps going on it.

Do you rotate the pipe cutter towards it's 'guiding wheels' or away from? I always go away from them, and use them only to keep the line straight, rather than using them as an anchor point to press against as most plumbers seem to (now that plumbers don't solder anything)

I now feel old as i thought every sparks had a chalk line , but the new breed use lasers.

i do use lasers but still revert back to chalk line unless there is an issue with marking a painted ceiling.

I have got a laser line it just when doing a large room with say 20 to 30 lights it's nice to have the referance lines on the ceilng so you can visualise the final positions. The laser line can only project one line at a time so you mark out all the positions for the lights then find that they hit a couple of joist you then have to set the laser up to move the lights across etc were as with a chalk referance line you just have to measure from the wrong position to the new much quicker especially if your working with someone else.
