Allright everyone

Firstly I know this thread might belong in the NVQ section but I thought it would be relevent here too because an employer would be suited to anwering my question.

Anyway bin doing my aprenticeship with crown house technologies for a year and 5 months ish. When I started I was put on the EAL apprenticeship instead off city and guilds, I was told that everyone would be doing this from now on. So basicly spoke to a new electrical apprentice the other day in his first year, with the same company and he told me that his year group have been put back on city and guilds. So anyway I mentioned it to a family friend who runs a small electrical firm and he said he has never heard of EAL and as an employer would hesitate to employ me because it sounds like I have been on a 5 week wonder course. I am wondering if the reason I was put on that course was because it was tied up with the BESNA and thats the reason why the new apprentice is back on city and guilds because the BESNA failed?

Any advice on this weather I should push to be put on city and guilds? Or does it not matter ?

Any advice would be great

NVQ is more important to employers. A C&G or EAL qual just proves you have the theory to the job, an NVQ proves you have the Skills and theory to do the job. Granted, C&G is recognised by everyone but even then it can be confusing with all the different quals available. when i started my apprentiship it was the first year of C&G 2351, it only lasted 2 or 3 years and was superseeded by (i think) 2360.

Is your apprenticeship through JTL? Maybe it's something to do with crown house, intended on leaving the JIB for BESNA. JTL use city and guilds, and BESNA were going to use EAL?

Yeah it was through JTL. Completed it in 2005. Looks like crown house are using jtl again if your mate is doing C & G. Id imagine the course work is musch the same so you might be able to transfer but crown house may be locked into a contract with EAL for the duration of your apprenticeship.

Sorry for the long delay, only just got back on the computer,

bigbaddave the course is called [h=1]EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems (Building, Structures and the Environment)[/h]skyesparky, i guess your right the NVQ is the main thing ! I just would feel more comfortable on the wel known course to be honest, its with a training company called B.E.S.T building engineering services training. I think it may have something todo with the besna tho, think i may speak to my training officer about my feelings, worth a try ?

Thankyou for all the advice, it has setttled my head that it is an NVQ after all which shows your time served

Krisfire09, the guys are correct. The key thing that matters is the NVQ and the Grade card you will get at the end. BEST is a properly organised industry training body and the EAL is a reputable qualification, it is just as others have said, it is not as well known. But the key thing is that you are doing a recognised apprenticeship and there are others on this forum that would give their right arm to be in your position. So don't worry and count yourself lucky that you will come out as a properly qualified time served spark.

Good luck and make the most of your training!

Yes mate your doing an apprenticeship with one off the biggest M & E firms in the country so there not going to put you on a training course that isn't recognised! Hope things are going good with you there.
