Dear lighting manufacturers, you do make some very nice lights, but please can you manufacture them so that we can comply with the regulations , we cannot connect a fitting with three single insulated cables connected to a terminal block and wrapped in insulation tape and pushed into the ceiling void , and the amount of space in some of your fittings , well we have to use a minimum of 1mm to connect these fittings they wont fit through a hole thats only 5mm in diameter, and your terminal block sometimes be so small we cant get three cables into that , and why do you put the fixing holes be hind the fixed glass , or have so many small parts that you need to be an octopus with a rocket science degree to assemble ,your screws with no slotes in the heads ,with spring clips that do not hold a fitting in place , and those nice little uplighters that have the fixing holes straight where the cable is in the wall , and why on those down lighters do your terminal covers fall off , those nice little wall lights you have designed for use with out cable because you have left no space for them , and why do you put the cable entry holes right by the lamp , and those little ceramic up lighters can you supply a 25mm long screw driver so we can fix them to the wall , it would be nice for the terminal screws to be the type that actually fit a screw driver , it would be nice if you could see the problems we have installing your lights thank you for listening lighting manufacturers

dear nickblake,

thank you for your letter. unfortunately, we cannot comply with your requirements as all our fittings are made by chinese slaves on a bowl of rice per day , and they can't comprehend the fact that the lights need wiring to work, they think they work by magic. isuggest that you try using our new magic lanterns. just screw them on the wall, light the fuse, and away you go. regards, www.nippon lighting .com.

Dear User

If you take your feeds to the switches you will not have this problem.

P.s. we also sell wall lights in this range, good luck getting ~5 cables into that rose

Regards

I just cut rubbish connectors out and use my own. Don't think I know a single sparks that uses the terrible fixing's and connector strips that come with it. My boss says your an electrictian and should have everything to get you out of trouble

well, yes , i do. so join the cables. put a condom round them, and stuff up into ceiling.

Nick,

you have got to remember that such fittings are designed by computers, costs cut by accountants and nobody actually tries to instal them in real houses before they manufacture them!

aaaargh, installing fittings in real life???????? come on now.it's only an illusion. they are only designed to look pretty in a catalogue.

I hate it when they attach a connector block to a silly metal tab on the fitting for the earth which makes it impossible to terminate the cables into the sized fitting

I've learnt that the fancier the light fitting, the crappier the terminal screws...

If it's a Homebase crystal-ish chandelier with 10 bulbs and twenty thousand glass dangley bits then the chances of not stripping one of the terminal screws if fairly slim...

Oh, and I also despise those stupid fittings that you have to practically hold in your mouth whilst connecting up and then trying to slot on to a rubbish flimsy bracket on the ceiling...

I have asked the question how can these lights be sold ... answer because the general public buy them very good eh great when mr diy fits then makes a farce of the regs

I think they polled the customers and discovered a hundred percent want fashion over function. And if it looks pretty customers (women) are prepared to pay any amount for it!

I had the misfortune of trying to install 20+ wooden light fittings which had crappy terminal blocks and about 2 square centimeters of space to work in. The terminal blocks filled the space inside the fitting so no space for cable, also no cable entry point. Absolute rubbish. I had to replace all the massive terminal blocks with smaller 6amp ones and wire the whole lot in flex. Nightmare.

Nearly blew my top yesterday...... nice easy little job for a monday (morning), fit x 15 down lights, holes cut already by customer, loft above - simples.

BUT customer to supply lights, didnt think much of it as have supplied my own downlights for so long now and forgot how cr@p other stuff can be.

A job which should have taken a few hours tops ended up taken nearly double that (and I'd done this on a price.)

Basically matey had brought them off ebay!!

I went to fit/push up through the hole and the spring wings were so tight that if I pushed anymore the plasterboard would have cracked or wings would have bent.

Ended up having to take all wings off and fit from above, absolute nightmare trying to re-fit .... fighting against each spring, having to stop light from falling out below and laying in a superman position!! :cuss:

Never again.

When customers are insistant that they supply the parts I state that ANY time spent sporting out any issues will be charged at my hourly rate - that normally makes them think again!

When customers insist on suppling parts I haven't agreed to, I state on my estimate that any issues with the customer supplied parts/work will be charged at my hourly rate - it normally makes them think twice!
