I know its had to say without seeing the job but can anyone tell me how long they would expect it to take to complete the following rewire...

-One newly qualified electrician
-Not being lived in or any furniture
-All floorboards exposed
-Good sized 3 bed house (lounge, kitchen, dining and breakfast room)
-All chasing required (exisiting sockets on skirting)

Thanks :)

anything from 4 days to about 7. much easier if you have help chasing and pulling cables.

approx two working weeks (10 days) if you are alone and newly qualified dont fall into the trap "most sparks can do it in a week so i must"

So it's a void rewire, 3 bed, chased in. Are you making good, is it bare minimum in each room sockets & lighting wise??? telephones, TV, Sky etc etc???

You may be looking at at as much as 10 days if theres a lot of kit going in & making good the chases.

if the drops are in tube, you may be able to re-use a lot of it. and it all depends on how many hours you put in each day.
seriously, though, a full rewire is really a 2 man job.

All your chasing first a couple of days. Then all your wiring lifting boards and running cables fitting them perhaps 2 1/2 days. Fit the board a day. 2nd fix 1 day perhaps day and a half. Testing and certs a day so allow 8 days that could go into a 9th morning.

That's on your own if you have someone to help then you can take perhaps 3 days off that, certianly 2 and half.

wow!! from a new build/rewire i would expect to take couple hours to fit board and to test it all out! the joys of knowing where all your stuff goes and terminates etc!
have to rename you speedy gonzales. 2 hours for a board inc. snags! and hypnotising the cut-out seals to fall off!!!

Well that is like a piece of string really. If it's 6 circuits and a nice easy fit then yes. But I also allow bonding in that which may need cable running to. Changing you tails , I always fit an outside MET.

I don't think I have ever fitted a CU in a couple of hours to be honest. A fairly decent size board dressed neatly should be half a day with a tails fit and bonding. I just would allow a day and take everyting into account

Agreed!!! hence why i hate answering these type of questions!!
what else would you be doing on a bank holiday morning? fitting an extra socket for the wifew's hair dryer? tidying out the van? making friends with a new bottle of Jack?

10 days would be fair. Usually work on the basis first week 1st fixing as the target, second week 2nd fix board and test no pressure then. I allow a day for the board and testing too, the board is the one part of the install people actually take notice of, this then gives them a slight degree of confidence on the rest of the rewire you've done doesn't always work like this but it does show a level of professional pride.

me and jack fell out!!! i cheated on him new years eve!!

at FT work mate!! and yes van needs a tidy!! might use my time constructively at work!! :)

Myself, one other sparky and a good grafting labourer, 3 to 3 and half days, plus half day for plasterer to make good and a good clean up. But as Lenny states, are you doing TV / SKY /Alarms etc, this will increase time needed. My quoted time is due to experience, i have done loads of them, and the lads who help have as well, and they know how i work and what is expected. If its any help, my first ever rewire was a 3 bed bungalow, a very big bungalow, and it took me and my mate 10 days.

Cheers..Howard

Lol, 23 posts and now the OP knows he's looking at between 2 and 14 days!

This will be great experience, take your time, plan routes logically, make a really good job of it.

"All your chasing first a couple of days."

Hum, this could be very optomistic. Self and a mate are currently working on a complete rewire of a 4 bed, 4 reception villa and we have spent 6 days so far - day 1 temporary supply and taking out what electrics that were there. So 2 1/2 mans days each on chasing out and we've not even looked at the kitchen as yet.

You haven't said anything about the type of construction/smoke alarms/downlighters/extras!!

We've got 20 days costed in and it could get very tight towards the end!

2 weeks especially if you're new to it. If you can give someone a few days cash work helping you with chasing and running the cables it's gonna cut down that time considerably. If I do a rewire on my tod when I haven't much else on I sually allow 2 weeks, but that's for the works, telly, phone, networking etc, empty house WITH furniture.

Agree with Durham if putting in the board on something you rewired yourself it should be a lot quicker... I wouldn't say 2 hours, but certainly in a morning, barring any major problems. Mind you I'm a bit of a weirdo I LOVE putting in boards and all the testing that goes with it.....

I'd say to that if house is unnoccupied then temp supply should be a builder's board whacked into the tails featruring a 20A RCBO and just some extension leads, much quicker than messing around. Also, we know scrap is quite high right now but when you're up against it time - wise, just pull out what's easy and leave the rest plastered in the walls.

I agree with you chasing always takes longer than you'd think, but unless that's one crazy spec job 5 or 6 days chasing is a hell of a long time, even on a property that size. What tools are you using? You're not doing it all by hand, are you?

By hand, you must be mad, our SDS drills are working hard!

Seriously though, the house has a good quantity of engineering style bricks in it and the owner has asked for a few additions such as the cellar being wired up, and both of the loft spaces!

I would agree with DurhamSparky and expect the board to take 2 - 3 hours only. The same applies with what most of the guys are saying on here - you really need a hand to pull cables in. The always snag on something which will give you more work in the long run trying to trace why test results are wrong! Give it 8 - 10 days at the very most for the bog standard rewire and taking into account the lack of experience which counts for a lot time wise!

Good luck

Do loads of small re-wires myself. Did one like this just before Christmas. Start to finish 7 days. Around 2 days chasing out, lifting boards etc. 3 days 1st & 2nd fix. 1 day tidy up plastering, 1 day install C.U and test.

I have done many rewires like this myself and have a method that works for me. Until you find a similar method it may take you a bit longer. If I were you I would probably estimate for 8 or 9 days.

Hope it goes well.

Ian

If you don't or can't get a mate to help for the entire job, then I would for when pulling in yer cables. As said already, they will always snag somewhere and you'll be running around like mad! I should practice what I preach really!

did a 'simple' rewire on a 3 bed house in sept last year that took 20 days. a few extra points amounted to a total 100 sockets and switches, plus alarm plus smokes plus garage plus outside lights. Walls were rubbish as well so had to be very inventive when fixing backboxes. Also client scheduling was very bad since had kitchen fitter and plasterer on site from day 2 and kept moving where he wanted things. also had to redo wiring in kitchen due to fitter drilling through 3 of the 6 drops. Solid downstails floor also ment lots of chasing and no usable conduit existed.

What I am saying is just be clear on what you are doing in the time. the above job was completed with all parties reasonably happy due to lots of communication and a very clear up front scope of works from me.
