How to tell if socket is on ring or spur off spur

Ok so you have the classic to cables in back of socket. Spurs should be identifiable through higher resistance but if very short spurs and it's an older install and you want to break into the ring to add another socket. You could be creating a spur off spur off spur?

How do u go about being certain in this scenario before the addition and do u always do it in practice?

Test the continuity of the the Ring Final r1,r2,rn, (R1+R2)

Maybe if you don't know which basic test to carry out to ascertain this you shouldn't be carrying out the job in the 1st place.

I'd there is one cable then it's likely to be a spur. If there are 2 cables test for a ring.

But unless the test is done at the cu too then it could simply be a loop off a radial

My 2nd post is really valid. I was fault finding a "ring" a few weeks back, which at a socket "looked" like a ring and tested as a ring BUT at the CU it turned out to be 1 x radial and 1 x lollipop - on a 32A breaker.

Isolate the circuit and connect phase and cpc (R1 + R2) of cable 1 together and do the same to cable 2. At your socket you should have 2 cables with continuity between R1 + R2. Still worth checking the whole circuit out though, R1, RN, R2, R1 + RN and R1 + R2. Best not to use a plug in test lead on old sockets as loose contacts etc can throw the readings out, drop the fronts and take the readings from the screw terminals.

I'd tear the circuit apart and ring out each wire run with a long lead to see what is joined to what then sketch it out and make sure I am happy with it, I then rip up the floor if needed or downrate the circuit if neccessary.

I have found some thing under those floors that others have chosen to ignore.

Taped joints, JB spider webs on 32A OPDs, unenclosed connections, rodent damaged cables.

But don't worry I always poke the camara down there first to see if there is a real need to rip up the floor. If there is - it is better than a fire...

whats wrong with a lolipop circuit.

if they used 6mm then split off in 2.5 twin ring it would be fine as long as it was on 32 mcb.

ive come across a 4mm ring in a houss before, i dont think they bought the cable (no 2.5 in the place)

true but there is no way of knowing if its a radial,ring or hybrid without testing and sometimes discounting sockets, connector strip and long lead

Of course if your DIY it wont matter because as we all know.
They spur from a spur all the time, and 10 years down the road have never had a problem.
Why ??
Because kitchens aside, the loading on that extra bit of 2.5 is never likely to exceed its rating.
